Default Lower Hudson - 2 day report with live report

Hey all... Got out the Wed and Friday of this week (day before and after the heavy rains with the crew. 2 fish Wed to 21.5" north of the TZ bridge. Friday saw an increase in numbers as well as size with 8 fish caught to 26" south of the TZ!! What a beauty the 26" was... Got me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!! Water temps around 35 degrees. Pics of the 26" to follow as I can't upload off my phone.

Live report:
Out on the river now, south of the bridge, got on the water at 615 and have had 4 fish so far going to 20". My buddy actually just banged one as I was typing the report.

All fish on bloodworms on the moving tide, incoming/outgoing seems to be the ticket with the bite dying at slack.

Tight Lines.

Nice job , don't leave to many with sore mouths before they travel all the way up here next month. HAHA

Correct me if i'm wrong ... But i thought that section of the river up by the TPZ falls into the season opening of March 15th ? Isn't the cut off the GWB ? If so, i thought you couldn't target them at all, not even C&R ?

I have never fished down there, so i may be wrong

Thanks,
BB

thanks for the report,
but i think your starting the season a little early bud.
maybe he has a permit he can use from last season, like hunting up north, they have a weekend were you can use your tag if you didn`t get your deer.

sounds like you guys haven't been reading your rules and regulations... please make sure you know the rules/regs before making "accusations"! According to the NYSDEC Receational Marine Fishing Guide, and I quote, "During the closed recreationational season for striped bass, catch and release fishing by angling only is permitted. (pages 11, 13, 14)"

Check it out, no appologies needed... but like an old teacher once told me, "think before you thunk"...

i can`t find my nys fishing reg book, but if iam wrong i want to make it wright .
i aplogize .
best of luck go get um.

i just went out and got my marine fishing lic., and picked up the regs book.
and it is as clear as mud to me.
on the top left page 13, is takeing and possession, and it says a person may not fish for a species , not even catch and release during the closed season for that species on a given water. this is under general regs.
and on page31 tidal hudson river regs. it says state wide angleing regs apply except as listed below
striper hudson river and tribs.from north of gw bridge open season mar.16th to nov.30th size 18`` min. daily lim. 1
i hope some one can show me how to under stand this better ?

Totally wasn't trying to start something but i thought i just read somewhere that Stripers could not be c&r during the closed season.

I just remembered where i read it too ... this is right out the coop report i got emailed to me from NYSDEC just 2 days ago.

most of you know this already, but I feel I should just run down the striper and herring regulations for the upcoming 2011 season.

Striper season in the Hudson River opens on March 16th and runs through November 30th. Just so you know…. you are not allowed to target striped bass out of season even if you are going to release them. The size limit is still 18" with a bag limit of 1 fish per person per day.

I agree that the regs book are not always perfectly clear, and Didn't want to see anybody get pinched based on a few fishing reports here.

It won't make a difference in 3 days anyway, just sharing the info i read.

AND not trying to kill your mojo, sorry dude, i am glad to see the fish are heading this way.
I'm sure the big girls will be in soon for you guys down there. Good luck.

BB

The regs are def a bit contradictory so just to double check and me sure we were fishing within the law, my buddy called the DEC hotline and confirmed that catch and release is permitted year round for striped bass. So I guess it just boils down who ya ask. As for me, I'm strictly catch and release, maybe this helps with some clarification. Let's hope we have a great season!

you just need to dig a little deeper into the regulations guide.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4015.html

(3) During the closed recreational season for striped bass, catch and release fishing by angling only is permitted. Catch and release fishing is defined as a fishery where the fish are returned to the water. During the closed season all striped bass taken shall be returned to the water immediately without unnecessary injury.

I think it's safe to say that the wording in any regulations manual can be tough to decipher. I was the one that decided to call the DEC directly for my own clarification. iFish was definately right from the beginning - DEC confirmed. It was news to me as well.
