Default Flw Striper Series In New York

Team Catch And Release Wins First Wal-mart Flw Striper Series In New York
New live release techniques prove effective for striped bass, net winner $35,000

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (June 5, 2006) ? Team Catch and Release captained by Max Dallorso of Jamaica, N.Y., caught two striped bass weighing 33 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win $35,000 in the inaugural Wal-Mart FLW Striper Series tournament presented by Sirius Satellite Radio in Oceanside.

In accordance with tournament regulations, both fish fell within a 28- to 34-inch slot limit and were successfully weighed in alive and subsequently released to fight again. In fact, every fish presented for weigh-in at All Island Marine was alive thanks to innovative new live release systems developed by FLW Outdoors and Live Systems.

?The slot limit and catch and release format really appealed to us,? said Dallorso, a trader on the New York Stock Exchange floor who averages 150 days per year on the water. ?The slot really puts pressure on anglers to find the right fish, and catch and release is definitely the way to go. This was my first time using one of the new live release systems, and I was impressed with its performance.?

Dallorso and his crew ? Lewis Dallorso, Jack Cohen and Cliff Kayser ? put their first keeper in the boat at 11:30 a.m. then added their second fish about 30 minutes later. Both fish hit white and chartreuse parachute jigs tipped with pork rinds that were trolled on wire line at approximately 3 knots above mussel beds and rocks in 25 feet of water in an area known as ?The New York Bight.? Only artificial lures are allowed in FLW Striper Series competition. ?In parachuting, the trick is to constantly pump the rods while you are trolling to keep the jig skirts flaring,? Dollorso said.

Rounding out the top three finishers were team Daily Bread captained by James Culleton of Rockaway Park, N.Y. (two fish, 31 pounds, 1 ounce, $1,750) and team Big Fish captained by Glenn McCarty of East Rockaway, N.Y. (two fish, 30 pounds, 15 ounces, $1,255).

Team Mollysring captained by Louis Drake of Long Beach, N.Y. (two fish, 30 pounds, 5 ounces, $612); team Quarter Day captained by Tomas Tripi of Lynbrook, N.Y. (two fish, 30 pounds, 5 ounces, $755); and team Wellcraft captained by Tomas Morford of Sea Bright, N.J., (two fish, 30 pounds, 5 ounces, $755) finished in a three-way tie for fourth place.

?To win this means a lot to us,? Dollorso said. ?To have your name forever attached to the very first tournament is something special.?

The new $1 million FLW Striper Series features seven qualifying tournaments held on Saturdays plus a no-entry-fee $150,000 championship. Teams, ranging in size from two to four anglers each, compete for a guaranteed top award of $20,000 cash in each qualifier and as much as $50,000 cash based on boat and engine bonuses from Hydra-Sports, Seaswirl, Wellcraft, Evinrude and Yamaha.

The winning team is determined by the heaviest accumulated weight of two striped bass falling within a 28- to 34-inch slot limit. The top 25 teams from each qualifier also advance to a three-day, no-entry-fee championship in Virginia Beach, Va., Dec. 7-9 for a shot at a top award of $50,000 cash on FSN (Fox Sports Net).

The next FLW Striper Series tournament will be held at Atlantic Outboard in Westbrook, Conn., June 24 followed by tournaments at Marina Bay on Boston Harbor in Quincy, Mass., Aug. 19; Bass River Marina in West Dennis, Mass., Sept. 16; Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, N.J., Sept. 30; Cedar Creek Marina in Slaughter Beach, Del., Oct. 28; and Gootee?s Marine in Cambridge, Md., Nov. 4.
