Sabiki Rigs for Shad

Has anyone had any success catching shad on sabiki rigs? I marked plenty of bait this weekend and tried a sabiki without the slightest nibble. Hook sizes were 12s. I've heard some say that small bare gold hooks are better and can be tipped with a piece of worm.

After an hour of throwing a cast net, I managed 3 Threadfins, but no Gizzards or Herring. I could see the larger baits flipping on the surface (and stripers busting them), so I know they were present. Frustrating.

Don't know about shad,I know they work well on mackerel though.

fished the hudson at albany, use them for herrings, and have caught shad on them, white and green and wht and red seem the best there

I catch white perch on them regularly, and a few crappie, but never shad. Offshore I have caught many baitfish with them.

7 shad this year on a sabiki early in the season ... upper Hudson River .
