Default Keep what i got?

Hello all. Been reading and learning a lot from all of these threads here. I just wanted to know what you guys think about my rod/reel setup. I got a 7ft ugly stick medium action (12-30lb test) and a penn 9 level wind bait casting reel not sure of the specs as i got it a long time ago as a gift from my dad. Im just getting into surf fishing as i don't own a boat and needed to know if im better off keeping the rod and buying a spinning reel or just buying a new setup all together? I havent been fishing for stripers since i was about 15-16 im 23 now and wanna get back into it. Thanks for the help

For surf fishing I would suggest using atleast a minimum 9' rod

Hi RedLine,
That sounds like a rod/reel set up for a boat, not for surfcasting. If surfcasting is to be your game, you'll be very hard pressed to make that outfit work well for you. I'd start over by getting set up with an outfit geared more specifically toward surfcasting

i can make that work. i'll mag the reel as it has an aluminum one and although the rod won''t handle large plugs? it will cast a pencil/spook/popper/tin. mad play in the tip so won't have plugging action but for these it's only a pencil that needs help. would i do that? no... do as these guys said and look into a surf outfit for this and use that outfit on a boat.
is that rod a spinning rod or a casting rod? what exactly does the rod say? BWB or BWS. ior CC something or other.. if it's BWS you can salvage that rod but the reel has to be changed. not the first time i have seen mismatched gear..Will now have to see.

i ended up buying a 2 piece 10ft Ugly stick rod/reel combo medium-heavy action. Next purchase will be a set of waiters and all the tackle ill need for stripers. Im starting from scratch so i'm buying little by little. Im looking to use mostly artificial bait as i want to be able to fish right after work most nights. i work 4pm to midnight.
