Post any 2019 Striper Reports and photos here. Hope to see a bunch of HAWGS. Feel free to include county or general area, No need to give up specific spots or honey holes.
Please try and limit it to just reports & congrats.
Fished the dam today, 62 deg, clarity good, high water rough and windy. Few guys by the power plant but otherwise nobody but me and the DEC netting and shocking. I got herring, shad and cats but no bass. DEC said they got plenty of bass and were surprised how few were fishing. Think I will try by Albany tomorrow.
The day today up at Norrie Point started out hot. The first light AM ebb bite is off the hook with aggressive fish and multiple rods going all the time. There were thick schools coming by with a constant flow of fish on the West Channel wall all the way down to Rogers Pt. The S wind kicked up around 8am which definitely put a dampner on the bite but it was still on...we just had to adjust how much line we let out to get the bait to the 21 FOW feeding zone which was a bit deeper than usual. Unfortunately the threat of PM Thunderstorms took us off the water although I had an intuition we should have stayed because they never came the the river calmed right down...We ended with 50 for the day but this easily could have been a triple digit day based on the steady bite. Water temps were 59-60 degrees...still quite cold for this date.
Fished at Albany today, many herring, one bass at 32". Made a good video with Dylan playing in the background (it is his birthday and WEXT was playing 100 of his songs), but youtube blocked it for copyright shit. I am working on that. Here is a pic of the bass. Lots of herring a few hundred yards below the I-90 on the east side which is where I got the bass.
Nice! I guess it isn’t quite over up here. It’s deep on that side where you caught that one...we’re you on the bottom or did you target the 20’ range where the ff lights up? I’ve always been under the impression that it’s mostly herring when I see that. I thought I might travel south but I couldn’t get out of work early enough to find blood or sands. If I decide to try Albany tomorrow maybe I’ll see you. I have an older blue and white super-fisherman. It’ll likely be only a few boats out anyway. Thanks for the report.
The bite continues....today (5/24)we ended up with 70 Stripers caught between Rogers and Norrie Point with one caught at 11 pm tonight in Marlboro Bay that was 37"/19lbs and unspawned. Tonight we marked more fish in Marlboro and Milton so this is good news that they have come here....I think we will have an extended season diwn here this year. The first light am bite up at Norrie point is absolutely insane on the Ebb tide. The winds kicked around 8am and there really was no northern drift on flood but for once the northern wind may have helped this afternoon. Even though it was a bit bouncy it was like being in slack tide for 2 hours as our baits were suspended and moving very slowly from west to east across the channel. Down accrosss from Rogers Point every time we drifted over the western drop we hooked up on all poles. When the wind died and current picked up to 2.5 mph the bite shut right off because ghe bait was moving too fast. Water temps are finally coming around at 60-61 degrees making the males much more active and aggressive. The schools seem to still be moving North. Heading back out in 2 hours for the am bite. We have beaten our kast years total already.
Hey Kirch, I was on the bottom in about 20 feet. I suspended a chunk but no hits. I am taking the day off today to plant the garden. They let me publish the video of the 32", here it is, music by the Zimmerman.
Today (5/25) was another epic day as we almost beat our all time one day catch record. We ended up with 166.....just 3 shy of our record. We gave it our all to try and beat it but the pm winds and weather moving in shut down the bite. This morning up at Norrie Point was off the hook. We got there before first light and the bite was on. On the am flood our first drift yielded us 44 as wwe drifted up toward the Esopus lighthouse. The school of Striper running on the west wall of the channel was miles long and headed south. Early am the got down to Marlboro and the fishing was good ther today. Wwe followed the school down oast Rogers Point, Poughkeepsie and into Marlboro Bay and picked at them all day before the bite shut down. Yes....they are clearly moving south pist spawn but there are a whole lotta Stripers left up north that have yet to come down and they are still spawning. They have nit reached Newburgh yet but I suspect they will be there in a day or so. This school was moving incredibally fast and slammed our baits meaning business....sometimes one fish hitting 2 rods. Water temps are climbing and are up to 62 in Marlboro and up at Norrie. We will be out at first light again to take advantage of the early am bite which lasted from the end of flood into slack and half way through ebb.
Another skunk for me up in catskill. They're still there on the screen though. Saw a huge monster jump in the center channel. Herring is starting to get difficult this past week.
Got excited when I caught one herring when I was anchored in about 30ft. So, I had alteast one line on live. Only had 2 from 2 days ago from the fridge. 63 degrees and clarity is getting better. Heard other talk about their herring difficulties and they're still having runs and hits still.
The catfish been loving the green leader and spinner on chunk. Green leader and floating bead got more attention as well.
Where I work, we have emergency repairs to equipment. So, I've been here the whole weekend. Hopefully, today will be a 1/2 day and I can get my little 14 footer and 8hp down there for the afternoon.
Sounds like today was awesome, too bad my partner for today bailed last min. Oh, well the wife was happy, got some stuff done, will be out tomorrow at 7am, in newburgh, what is the marine channel I should be on? Thanks guys for posting good stuff, nice seeing Doc on Saturday at Norrie point, I was the guy with the tan cowboy hat in the Montauk, have a great day on the water!
Late post today as we fished all night......5/26.....we ended up with 104 and broke the 1000 mark for the year. Milton and south of Poughkeepsie was absolutely on fire.....we couldnt keep the rods baited fast enough. We got into bigger fish too......28 over 30" with about 15 of them in a row in one drift at IBM. Through the nigt last night we marked tons of schools mid channel moving south but on a feeding frenzy too.....unreal bite all night but best at the slack tides as these fish a still lazy and do not want to chase bait when the tide is moving over 1 mph. Both ebb into slack and flood into slack were good. The bite has slowed a bit this am as these fish have moved south but there are more coming down so we are on a mission to intercept them now. Milton should lite up again today esp flood into slack.
Put in at Schodack SP, 62 deg good clarity. Many marks on the FF but only got one herring. Hooked it through the nostril, fished him on the bottom, suspended and drifting for two hours, nothing. Let him go, swam away. Luckiest herring in the world.
Fish the dam for 4 hours tnight herring were hitting decent but deff slowing down. One shad and one decent foul hooked catfish and possible run and drop and some spawning action
Fished out of Kingston on Sat. morning. Fished from 6:30 til about 11:00 boated 3 cats in the 24" range using large shiners in @ 35' of water. lots of fish jumping and lots of marks on the finder but no known striper hits. will figure it out someday.
Yesterday (5/27) was another good day although not as good as the prior week. We found some schools early in the day just south of Poughkeepsie and north of the Canoe Club and picked away at them. After 2 hours they moved on. As the Ebb current increased the fish seemed to scatter for most of the day. They did show up at Ebb into slack from IBM to Trap rock and some moved into Marlboro Bay. The Slack tide at IBM never really lit up like the day before. We also checked the area around White's and the Power Plant and it was pretty dead. At the end of the night on Flood tide we drifted Marlboro bay and it was pretty loaded just south of Trap Rock again. We have now marked more fish on the West side too as they are starting to exit. Last night there was a fair amount of spawning in the northern end of Marlboro Bay...quite impressive. We ended the day with 58 most in the 25 inch range. Water temps went from 62 to 64 degrees. Work today then out again tonight into tomorrow.
I have to say this has been by far the best year for us ever with 1103 Striper boated to date (Only 5 kept....rest released) because we have adapted to different parts of the river and are able to go where the fish are...although I added my gas bill to over 4K so far with all the traveling. My buddy JJ is well over 1200 for the season.
I'm guessing drifting in that many feet of water with chunk is useless.... Need worms. Does drifting with live herring mid channel mid depth worth it.
Where can you find them? Red Hook shop is out. Catskill opens Thursday. Will try Norrie point this weekend again, but with nicer 16ft deep V, with canopy and 20hp outboard.
I bought (8) challenger 4inch deep divers today. 4 gold/yellow. 2 tiger green. And 2 in purple shad.
Someone I know is selling their 1802 trophy with Yamaha 4 stroke and kicker end of this summer! Think it has atleast 2 downriggers if not more.
Anyone have a good book on the subject? Been looking for a few years. closest thing I found is a 1990's book on the Delaware river. Covers all species, seasons, and styles of fishing.

Keeping it Reel Bait and Tackle on 58 Noxon Road in Poughkeepsie has herring, bloods, sands and sometimes eels. They have a FB page. The depth does not matter that much....in fact...this time of year when they are spawning they are generally hanging out over very deep water.....2w ago I crushed them over 132 FOW at Crumb Elbow by Rogers Point....even in that depth they still only hit around 18 feet down.
Might just go all the way down there to get worms.
Doc thanks for the tips and the reports.
I know the catskill baitshop owner really likes drifting with a bobber on a 15ft leader with live.
You guy ever tried the dead eels rigs. I got about 2 dozen frozen eels I need to rig up. Never tired them in the Hudson though. Mostly inlets in RI and NJ.

I never got a hit on a dead eel in the Hudson.........plenty of hits on live eels. You can also use a bobber the same way with a worm...esp when it is not calm as it presents the bait much better and will get more hits as opposed to your poles bouncing around with the boat.
Make sure you call the bait shop....I think he is putting in his last order for bloods and sands this Friday.
Put in at Coxsuckie today, fished the falls on the Stockport and got herring, Fished there and the cliffs, one kinda run, buncha marks in the river. Next time I go, in my Hudson River Cooperative Angler log book, I will write I am fishing for 'anything.'
Hit the water at 4am today (5/29) and it was worth getting up early........the first light bite was good and we ended up with 27 total in the 21-28 inch range. We drifted from IBM to the Rock plant and did well in the main channel. The fish are now hitting very aggressively and still heading North on the hit. The west side of the river is also loaded with Striper traveling back down. We did go down to Millionaire Row (just N of the Newburgh Bridge) and marked some very large fish. My buddy ended up with 5 over 30 inches there. There were also some very thick schools under the Bridge down to the first set of tanks that did feed on the am slack to flood tide. So far the Slack tides have had the best bite and the top of the current shuts the bite down. The evening bite was not too good on the Flood as most of the fish were on the channel floor. We rode out the T Storms at dock and went back out afterwards but the bite was poor and we only managed one after the storms. More fish are also starting to move into Marlboro Bay. Water temps were 63-64 degrees. I will be back out this Friday into the weekend. My prediction is that Newburgh will get much better as the northern fish travel back south and hopefully stay in the Bay for a few days before traveling out to sea. There should be a solid 10 more days to this run which is normally dwindling down by now...there are still a ton of fish up North that need to come down....you just need to figure out when they feed.
My mate took the boat out yesterday (5/28) and managed 17 nice fish up to 37 inches..........including several unspawned females in the same area we fished today.
Here are some pics from the last week. The pic below with the 4 of us is Striper #1000. Also notice on the sonar and side imaging how loaded Milton was.
Get out there and fish.......the entire West side from Milton to Newburgh is absolutely loaded with hungry fish. The best bite is early am and slows in the afternoon. My buddies are out there now crushing them....they are on their way to a 200 fish day.
Fished the Troy Dam today, 63 deg, clarity good, ceremony marking the opening of the boat launch taking place as I arrived from Albany. Cottonwood flying like snow. Herring still about although not numerous. Got 2 SB on live, 24" and 21". Another good run on a live, few runs on chunk fished without a sinker. Few cats on chunk fished on the bottom. Other than one guy by the power plant I was the only one fishing. Sunny, warm, light wind.
