Default Portsmouth harbor

Ok so I want to take my family blue and bass fishing in the Portsmouth harbor and maybe up river to lil bay and great bay. Now here is the question I have for you. I have a 19ft four winns bow rider powered by a 4.3 mercruiser. Is it possible that I can drop my boat in and fish these areas without swamping my boat? I know the current there is pretty strong at 4 knots my boat does about 37 wide open so I think I can handle the current. I'm just unsure of how big the waves get in these places. Also do you think I would be able to go out near the mouth for some mackerel? Any help on this would be great or would Hampton harbor be better?

53 reads and no advise yet. Dang.
Ok so I grew up on Narragansett bay catching blues and stripers. A few years back my job moved me to the lakes region. I would like my kids to enjoy fishing these fish too. The only reason I'm asking these questions is because it's a 2 hour drive to Portsmouth harbor 2 hour drive to Hampton harbor. 3 hour drive to Narragansett bay.

I've never fished Portsmouth Harbor, so can't give you any specific details on that area. That boat would do fine in Narragansett Bay though. Just keep an eye on the weather and wave height forecasts and you should be fine. Best of luck getting the kiddos into some fish. That's always fun and something that they'll remember for a long time.

Thanks for the help. Not sure if the blues come up this far but it's worth a shot.

Your boat is fine. On weekends the swells get pretty big under the 95 bridge, the power plant and across from the Navy Yard just due to being narrow and the amount of big boat traffic.

My advice is to avoid those places on weekends.

Great Bay different story. More like a lake. Headway speed under the Dover Point bridge. That is the fastest current in the water system.

But live by red right return until you get to know the waters.

Haven't seen a bluefish in the Bay all summer.

That is OK by me.

I was on the river on Tuesday. I have a 17 foot fish and ski and no problems. Had no luck and I think god had to play a dirty joke by getting skunked and then seeing a dead skunk floating by. Now that just hurt. Used Mackerel junks plus plugs. Still some what new to the river but was in great bay, down below the first bridge in dover and using the tide. Tried behind the power plant plus below the big bridge.

Coalman nice stripper. Saw the blog and to top off the ride eating lobster on your way to, Damn I want to be like coalman.
