Default Most successful way of catching herring.

I'd appreciate some ideas on how to catch river herring for live bait. I would be doing it from a boat. Some areas up by Kingston area also would help. Thanks

THE BEST WAY is to use a sabiki rig ...if you are gonna fish from shore the best way is to use a stoole and a 13x13 dip net dont go with a bigger dip net than 13x13 because you will need a permit

With the sabiki rig, how many hooks are you allowed and where and how would I do this? Close to shore near streams and creeks? Cast and retrieve the sabikis or just let them drift?

when the herring up here in full swing ive caught them either way

when you are fishing with the herring rig AKA sabiki you are only allowed to have 5 hooks . It really dont matter how you fish them as long as you are on the fish ive caught them casting out and jigging ..when i fish from shore i catch 5 or 6 at a time using a stoolie which is a 9 inch bait fish body ....BEST PLACE TO FIND THE HERRING IS IN 15 TO 25 FEET OF WATER NORMALLY

GOOD LUCK

I think it varies ... there are days i can load up on them with the Stoolie while jigging sucks. But other days you can jig them up 4-5 at a time.

Time of season plays into that a lot.

A stoolie is basically a 9" rubber fish that you attach to a fish line at the end of your fishing pole. You cast it out close to and usually paraelle with the shore. You reel it back to you and if there are any herring nearby, they'll follow the stoolie in. This is where the dip net comes into play. You manuever the stoolie and following herring over the net, which is in the water, and quicky lift it up. I personally use a 4'x4' scap net- makes catching them ALOT easier!
