Default bass with no gill plates?

Caught a nice size bass this morning. While dehooking I noticed he didnt have gill plates (the red gill ribbons were just free and visible). Is this a genetic defect or do some people remove them from bass when they are smaller?

It wasnt some random injury, because it was symmetrical on both sides. It was really strange, just trying to figure out how that can happen.

It was a 41" bass too, so this thing has made it like this for multiple years obviously...

Here is a picture below, if I did it right. As you can see, no gill plates. It is symmetrical (both sides look exactly the same) Never seen anything like it, it was sad to see a nice fish in such poor shape. Took me quite a while to get him to swim off as well.

looks like another gill net vick I haveed seen any that bad but have seen some with rings around ther neck
