Default BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE- Stripers 7/25/04

Boston?s inner-harbor bays continue to be the best producers for bass in numbers while on the outer harbor ledges blues are starting to show. Silversides are present in good numbers, however some butterfish, an unusual occurrence in the harbor, have fostered some good early-morning surface activity.

Speaking of fostering activity, Ernie Foster (Scituate, MA) of Webster Printing and client friend, both experience fly fishers, had a great morning trip in Boston?s inner-harbor on Wednesday. Striper?s were crashing on butterfish while the gulls picked-off the bait fish fleeing to the surface. The fly-casters did well with large chartreuse half & half?s fished on 400 grain Orvis, DepthCharge line.. Most of the bass were between 25 and 32 inches. Before the surface feeding activity abated on the ebbing tide, the fly fishers landed about 15 bass and three keepers?all released unharmed. Ernie?s client hooked the largest bass of the morning, however, as luck would have it, the fly line wrapped his finger on the first run. The big striper parted the 20-pound test Mirage fluorocarbon leader. On the return run to Cohasset, the anglers targeted the target water on the ledges off Minot and the Glades. They were rewarded with 8 to 10 school bass for their efforts.

Brian Madden and Kim Perry of Plymouth, MA had the same good fortune on Saturday morning. The bass and the butterfish again put on a show at first light. Both Brian and Kim received a fly-casting lesson on the water. That accomplished, they both proceed to hook their first bass ever on the long rod. Before the sky opened up and the deluge drove us home early, the novice fly casters brought three keepers to 32 inches and numerous school-size bass. Armed with their newfound skill and experience, they avowed to return to the harbor on a better weather day.

While I was guiding the inshore fly fishers in Boston on the B-FAST, Capt. Al and mate Ted were running east of the back for ground fish in the deep-water on B-Fast?s JANET B. John Poland and friends from Trenton, NJ had what proved to be a great trip for haddock using skimmer clams.

The anglers found mostly haddock in the 300-350 ft depths cooperative on the out-going tide. Fishing these depths with bait requires the non-stretch, high-tech line to hold bottom and feel the light bite of haddock. Haddock came over the rails 10 to 1 over codfish. Before the strong NE winds came up the Garden State anglers were able to fill the boxes with 70 keepers to 12 pounds and a few cod to 15 pounds in the mix. The deep-water haddock fishing should be strong right through the summer.
