Gizzard Shad

Can anyone tell me the general life cycle of a Gizz? How long do they live, how fast do they grow???

Also, what are the seasonal characteristics?? I assume their movements mimic the stripers.


If anyone wants to throw in alewives info tha woud be a nice addition to this thread as well.

Thanks Willie. That added some info but I was looking for more of a life cycle. How long they live, how they behave at different ages, how big they are at different ages etc.

The site you referenced did say that they will get to 4" the first yr but did not have additional info.

Anyone else know of any good shad info links/info??

Growth and Population structure: Average growth is 72 mm SL for age-0, 193 mm TL for age 1, 246 mm TL for age 2, 267 mm TL for age 3, 287 mm TL for age 4, and 325 mm TL for age 5 (Lagler and Applegate 1942).
