the surgeon loop is stronger than the perfection loop but what or why are you using it?

Whip the flyline(1/2 inch loop), surgeon the leader (2 inch loop).

Acually the Rapala loop is stronger and IMHO is easier to tie.
I did an experiment a while ago, tied a different loop knot on each side of a bit of 17# mono and pulled until it broke (it was very equal and very scientific but I don't feel like writing it all up right now - you'll have to trust me)
The Rapala loop consistantly came out the winner.

If you start to notice a hinge in your cast and the fly's won't turn over well it can be caused by the loop connection which has a tendincy to bend during casting.
To eliminate this you can tie in a piece of heavy mono with a nail knot. This seems to help turn the fly's over better without the leader and line hinging during the cast. Just be sure not to trim off the tag ends entirely, this will allow the knot to slip a little in case you hook a bigger fish. If you tie in about a foot or so of a heavy mono section use can use it as a butt section and then attach a leader or build off of it until you reach the desired length and strength.

Khary...A easyway to test loops ,mono or whatever, is to use a good scale with a stopper marker ,so you can see where it broke last...I did tests on lines in past ,also knots... Remember line companys have different diameters,so that has to come into your decision also..you'll be surprised at different tests....Remember to wet the knot when you tighten the knot.Really makes a difference.......... also do about 6 tests to get a average..Jim

How about tippet to leader? Gave up on loop to loop years ago except for fly-line to leader even then there are still the previously mentioned issue Uni to Uni knot best?

Thumbs up Re: Loop to Loop

Boatdog...as per the scale tests, I foundthe following....
Leader to tippet with a Triple overhand surgeons knot =100% same wth all portions of connecting leader sections. End of Fly line to leader...Use a 5 inch section of stiff 25 # test mono wuith surgeons knot to attach leader..
At all fly lines ( full & shooting heads) i attach a braided loop, which goes to reel..I lost two heads that had Shrink tube attachers..NO GOOD! Use the looping system that has 10# mono & nail knots holding,,,Iv'e never lost any of these loops..They test at 27-30 pds breakind & its usually the fly line that actually .breaks...Every thing at 100% pds....Hope this helps. Jim

Forgot to mention that you mark the white loops with Red & black laundry markers to designate line weight & Sink rate.. Red =5 & Black =one...Then coat with softex to seal....No mistakes ever !...Jim
