Restoring cork grips

Keeping my flyrods exposed in the sun, salt and whatever for years on the boat has taken its toll. The cork has discolored, shrunk and looking very craggy.
Other that taking some sand paper to them. Is there anything I can do to fill in the crags? Maybe re-hydrate the cork? Any tips will be welcome.
Thanks

hard on yer gear hey?.
there are a bunch of ways to address this. i read a few along the path to flyfishing. one is if terribly damaged use minwax putty and sand. or sand with a auto 400 grit paper which is used wet and when dry sand again. or if you are able to remove the cork alltogether without twisting the blank (don't do that!) and re-tape it with cork tape - alot easier that way but the tape could come undone in a year or two if your not careful and thorough.
