Default Kyle cat 1 Sunday

As of 3:00 PM rainfall across the state ranged from 1 – 2 inches in Northern Connecticut up to just over 3 inches in South Central Connecticut. The heavier rain from earlier today has tapered down to more intermittent showers this afternoon.

During the next 12 – 24 hours a low pressure system currently in South Carolina, which has a very large circulation, will continue pulling showers and thunderstorms Northwestward from the Ocean into Southern New England. According to the latest computer models the next period of sustained moderate to heavy rain may occur Saturday morning between 6:00 AM and Noon. During this time towns can expect occasional torrential downpours as areas of showers and thunderstorms move into Connecticut from the Southeast. Some urban flooding can be expected in poorly drained areas.

River and stream flooding may become somewhat more likely Saturday as the soil becomes saturated. The potential for flooding and the total amount of rainfall later on Saturday and Saturday Night will depend on the track of Tropical Storm Kyle. At 2:00 PM Tropical Storm Kyle was located at 26.9 North 68.6 West (approximately 200 Miles East Northeast of the Bahamas) and was moving to the NNW at 12 MPH. The official track from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) takes Kyle North and then NNE. According to the NHC Kyle is forecast to pass 100 Miles East of Cape Cod as a Category I hurricane just before Noon on Sunday. There is still some uncertainty about how much rainfall from Kyle will reach into Connecticut. The current models are still ranging from ½ inch up to 2 inches.

The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for all of Connecticut through Sunday. In addition, persistent Easterly winds and a New Moon may also cause some minor coastal flooding during times of high tide this weekend in Western Long Island Sound from East Haven to Greenwich.

Towns are advised to closely monitor the progress of Kyle. DEMHS will issue another update on Kyle and our heavy rainfall forecast at 9:00 AM Saturday Morning or sooner if the forecast changes.
