Default New to surf fishing

Just started surf fishing and picked a new pole and a used reel. Iwanna plug for striper. 9' ande surf rod and a penn 550ss reel. Is this a good combo or maybe is the reel undersized or rod too large ? Thanks for any input !

You should be ok. Myself, pesonally, would go with a 10' rod.
Now go get ,em!

Hi JD Welcome to the board. I think that rods rated at 1 to 4 ounces Med heavy action. It should be fine like Jimmy says. At least it wont tire you out. Might be a little stiff at the tip. After a while you'll get a "feel" for a propper balance.

9' is fine, I use 9' rods off the jetties and in the backwaters often.

10' and above will allow for longer casts, which are not always necessary, it really depends on where you're fishing.

That's an OK at best starter set. Odds are it won't last you long if you fish it hard.
