Default Wipers in the Ohio--Indiana

Anyone fish wipers in the Ohio? I often read they are there but have never tried. Any suggestions?

Hey Slow Retrieve,
Picked up a couple small wipers below Meldahl dam, I would guess you'd p/u a few below Markland dam, we hit a school of white bass, and wipers were tagging along?
We fished just below lock wall, as eddie was doubling back up river, whites and wipers seemed to school there, shad bodies on jig heads, 10# line to horse them out of shrubs as water was high.
Fish seemed to be hanging out on normal pool bank line. It's a blast when you find them, slow when you don't .......
Let me know how it goes!
Jeff

Fish for them on the Ohio year round. My best wipers to date, a pair of 17lber's came at Markland dam a few years back. We also like fishing the hot water disharges in the winter. There are a some good hotwater disharges in the Cannelton pool and a few in McAlpine pool as well, and they can be fish holding magnets!

Default Warm water discharge

Little Casino,
Aberdeen (Little 3 mile Creek) has a WWD, posts on OGF were hot and heavy for skips, wipers, white bass, etc. over the winter. My one trip there was a bust, except I got to kayak in January and try out new sonar install.
Seems WWD is hit or miss, at least there.
Looking forward to some wiper action on East Fork Lake, tomorrow if all goes well.

Good Luck Jeff. It looks like some stormy weather in my neck of the woods this weekend. Knock em out!

I also would like to see some pics of your kayak, if you ever get the chance to post some. It sounds like its pretty tricked out.

I caught my first Wipers below the McAlpine Dam (Louisville) last Wednesday afternoon. I caught 5 (largest about 18 inches) casting and trolling in the wash below the dam. Caught them all on a Shad Rap. The other boats were catching lots more than me. It was great, I'll probably go back again tomorrow.

My guess would be if you caught five wipers, your arms are probably tired and your average weight was in 2.5 to 3.0 lb area, though you would probably never guess it by the fight of the fish. Five fish is enough to make a wiper convert out of anyone. Nice going and congrats! I bet that eighteen incher was a fighter in the current. What pound test were you using?

I have tried the silver jointed and whole Shad Raps in Monroe and have never had so much as a hit from a wiper, but on Brookville that's my favorite for stripers in the late day and early evening.

Hey guys, too busy fishing to post! ;)

Been a slow early fall, water's too warm still, heading to
Greenup dam tomorrow w/grandson, Derek, 9, hope to post some wipers and whatever else we can accomplish.
Saw a nice 37'b Blue cat from Meldahl the other day, and a 5-6 lb wiper, I couldn't get a mosquito to bite........

I got back out on the Ohio (below the McAlpine dam) again yesterday afternoon. I trolled mostly. Started catching white bass then it was like someone flipped a switch and the Hybrids started hitting. I caught 5 or 6 Hybrids. They hit on a Silver and a Bleeding Hot Olive Rapala SR7 and a metalic blue Rattle Trap. And, I caught my first 2 Sauger. I'm looking forward to eating the Sauger.

That sounds like a great day. You must have trolled right through the middle of a bunch of feeders. Congrats!

Hey Jeff, were you at Meldahl when that bluecat was caught? Todd and I were there last weekend and saw a huge fish caught but couldn't see what it was. We thought it was a big flathead.

MacAlpine Dam. When it was in the upper 80s casting and trolling the surface with crankbaits worked pretty good. After this weeks rain and a 25 degree temperature drop what should I expect. What should I try? I'd like to get back out on Friday or Saturday.
