Default Eels and their sizes (question)

Met an older couple last night at a local fishing haunt that were eel fishing. They were catching for eating. Had quite a few and all biggies, like 1 3/4+ in diameter and probably 40" long(?)! They were using Stop & Shop steamers because they were on sale. (personally, I would of ate the steamers!) I've caught these myself years ago by accident and never gave it much thought.

Anyways, how big is too big for stripers along the shore?
I usually like 20-26"(+/-) as an upper limit mostly it's because it's what my rods will handle comfortably.
Know it's an opinion oriented question, but what is considered too big for linesiders along the shore? And why (is it because of gear or stripes taking the bait)?

And I blew an opportunity for some free skins because I was not prepared! (Ugh!)

i try to find the biggest ones at the bait shops....last month while out in a friends boat..a HUGE fish busted the surface right in front of us...as we got closer to my suprise an eel about 2' long..really thick was floating..dead..i suspect a fat ass cow killed it and screwed as we got close...the sun was almost down..another 1/2 hour i would never have seen the eel in the water..i guess the "big bait=big fish" theory is definetly "fact"...roc has said that a million times..he must be tired of saying it by now...i dont think he says it to make small talk..but big fish...

Feel that way myself.
But 30-40" eels are huge.
Can't really see casting one,,, but feeding into a drift?
Guess there's only one real way to know for sure.
(Gonna need a bigger eel bucket! )
Think a 3/4 - 3 oz rod will work?

2 feet is probably the largest I've ever used. My bait shop rarely has decent sized snakes, so it's not often I get to used something of that length. Mostly I'm fishing with 15-20" eels because that's all I can get without going out of my way.

a 3 or 4 foot eel....roccus would know. i would think if the eel is longer than the striper it may not be the best idea...but i guess when your looking for a new world record anything is possible....hey floatsum..you may need a tuna rod for your experiment...

If I was to get a striper big enough to gulp a 40" eel I wont need any beacon.
You'll hear my all the way to your house!
Actually, it would probably be pretty ":boobs:" don't you think?

I accidentally caught a huge eel. It was probably 2" in diameter, and was very mad at me. I got a little weary of trying to un-hook the beast directly, and resorted to a long pair of pliers. I can't imagine anything other than a monster trying to consume such a big eel. I'm six feet tall, and from my chest, it's tail was hitting the ground.

Years and years ago my dad had a boat in Sheepshead Bay, and right benind the boat, where it was docked, we would catch huge eels. We would then rig 'em for trolling. Bigger eels are just to big too cast.
