Default Boat size for fishing the sound

Hi, I don't fish the long island sound at all currently...however I fish the Hudson river around poughkeepsi often and was looking for any input on an all around size for a boat that could do both comfortably. I have been pretty stuck on 20'-22', but finding that size boat is just hard. I don't want to go larger due to trailering and traveling but I am afraid if I go smaller it won't be good for the sound. Any input would be appreciated. thanks

Been out on the sound a handful of times and have a 20' center console myself. Felt totally comfortable all but one time when things got pretty bad with a small craft advisory being about an hour or so away.

Can't speak for anything smaller but since I also hit Sandy Hook quite often I've gotten in the habit of always checking the marine forecast before heading out!

I'm looking at a 20' mako, I figured that being a center console you really aren't going to be fishing in garbage weather anyway, unless it turns on you. but since it is a 2 hour ride to get to the sound for me I would check the forecast for shore. thanks for the input
