Default New to RI/surfcasting

Hello all,
I moved to Rhode Island this spring and after checking out the freshwater fishing have decided to give surfcasting a try. After some online searching this site looked to be the best to get the help I'm going to need. Looks like there's a lot of knowledge here.

You wouldn't happen to be over at the Navy Base would you?
The screen name seems to suggest a Navy Corpsman, possibly Airborn qualified?
Get a PM to me, We can talk about shortening the learning curve a bit.

I've been to and have been active at all of them, This is the only place you will find me now. I may be partial, but for good reason, this place is the best by far.

Hey guys I'm also new to ocean fishing. I have been freshwater fishing in Michigan all my life but I'm pretty clueless to this. I went out on a friends boat and was hooked. I picked up a surf rod and am going to try my luck off shore. Any pointers on areas to try? Thanks in advance all

Hi, Welcome aboard,

For your first post you probably don't want to be looking for locations just as a word to the wise. I will tell you though. In RI there are a few things you need to consider before heading out.

#1 Safety First- RI is extremely jagged and the fishing is tough from shore but can be highly rewarding and addicting. Make sure you buy Korkers and waders. The water is warm enough now that you wont catch a cold from it but if you take a digger on the rocks you want to have protection.

#2 Saltwater fish eat and hunt the similar to fresh water fish it is just a much larger stage. They seek shelter current structure etc. They will be around all of those things.

#3 Pick a place in RI on the coast and fish it. Don't get frustrated if you don't catch fish we all go through it. Right now things are slowing down. They will pick up again around the second week in September. When you catch a fish remember what time of day it was what the tide wind and moon were. Chances are if that situation repeats itself in the near future the fish will be there again.

Best of Luck Welcome aboard don't be afraid to use the search feature some of these threads have more info than some of the Books out there.

Hey everyone, this is my first post and I figured I would start here because I too am new to RI and surf fishing. I have been freshwater fly-fishing in NH for about 12 years but surf fishing has simply become an addiction. I caught my first striper a couple weeks ago (about 36" long) and couldn't hide my content.

Anyways, I usually fish down on second beach in Newport but was wondering if anyone here would be willing to take a relative newbie out sometime and show me the ropes. I have all my own equipment but this is definitely a sport where local knowledge and techniques play a huge part. I know things are slowing down a bit now but was hoping someone would enjoy company on an upcoming night. Thanks a bunch for the great forum and all the insight that is offered here.
