Default Catfishing With Sarah

Had a day off Monday and asked my daughter if she wanted to go catfishing. Of course she said yes, and what a day she had!

Thats my girl! Not to bad for just turning four!
If my memorie is correct, my first catfish was a bullhead at maybe the age of seven!

She's gonna be a fisherman's dream when she grows up, with all that catfish slime all over her for perfume! ;)
Great way to spend a day off, LC, you are one of the few in the enviable position to do what you do for a living on your day off too, and still love it!

Thanks everyone I appreciate the kind words!

Roccus, The biggest one was 9lb's, and we boated a total of 17 that afternoon. I had to actually eliminate a few rods cause things started getting a little crazy! Now, dad had to help her some too. I would hand her the rod and she would hang on for while and then dad would have to take over, and then I would let her have the rod back when I got some of the bigger ones closer to the boat. She would then try and drag them over the side by going to the other side of the boat, it was hilarious.

Baitrunner, That time will be here before you know it! Have you started your little girl out with panfish yet?

No,, bought her her own little rod last week and she cranked the handle pretty well when we spooled it up together. I have no idea where to take her around here for good panfish action. I was thinking South Watupa Pond in Fall River, but I've never fished there yet, so I have no idea what kind of fishing we'd encounter. I've only fished saltwater since moving here from Missouri.

Do you have any ponds in the neighborhood or know anyone that doe's? They usually are chalked full of panfish.

When starting my daughter out catching panfish along with other small kids, I will use a fly, spider, nymph ect. and a strike indicator.
Then all they need to do is just lob it out there and watch the indicator to move and fish on!
It is amazing how fast they can pick it up and you don't have to bait any hooks. My daughter has got so good at it that I'm probably going to get her a little fly rod here in the future.
Another tip is to make sure you got a pair of hemostats and cut or file the barb off, as it will make for easier removal and save you some flys from being damaged in the process too!
