I use a circle hook through the lips. You have to cast and retrieve, or that eel will ball up, sitting still. Or wrap itself around something, prolly your line.

assuming you are buying the eels from local bait shop, when you get to said dock get yerself a bucket (prefferably white) and get a little water from where you are fishing. put the eels in that bucket of water to get them acclimated to the water temperature so they won't be shocked by the temp change when you toss em in the drink. make sure you ask the baitshop questions while your there. anything you don't understand prior to going on your way. sometimes we like to think we remember what we hear or are quite sure we understand what it is we have to do to be successful. last thing you wanna do is forget what you've learned on the sites you frequent and fly by the seat of your pants. don't buy just 2 eels as you may screw up one or two or lose a couple to the gods as they are slippery, and or wing one to the gods but, either way you need ample amount of bait and change the water now and again to keep em lively.

Hey Rich, not that ya won't get your share of answers here in this forum but you'd be much better suited to try a search on the topic. Eels are widely discussed on this site, make sure ya pay close attention to a guy by the name of Roccus, long regarded as the King of Eels on this site and abroad!!!! I dont think ya need a weight on your line to be honest with ya, maybe in deeper water but otherwise unnecessary. The best advice I can give ya on the subject is to keep it as simple as humanly possible when using eels. Once ya cast them out there give them a few seconds to sink/swim to the bottom as it's their nature to look for cover underwater, be it just a sandy bottom or moreso, if there are rocks/other structures lying on bottom. Hope some/all of this helped man, good luck on your quest!!!

I have found I can keep eels alive longer without water, I just use a soft sided cooler with some damp seaweed and a blu-block to chill them out. Ive kept them alive for 3-4 days this way. They are also easier to rig up when chilled.
