Default Crabcoat test

I did up 6 plugs with crabcoat. Treated them the same as I would normally that includes linseed oil/mineral spirits seal, dry for a week, seal with shellac, prime, paint, spray on scratch coat and then 3 coats of crabcoat instead of a couple coats of epoxy. They look good now, but let's see how they hold up with a seasons worth of fishing. I'll fish these extra heavy, and let a couple hang around the boat unprotected from the elements. Gunny already confirmed they will withstand being thrown out of a car window at 50, and bounced against some walls....The stuff does go on easy and dries quick.

So far, not as good as Etex Epoxy. I'll post pictures at the end of the season. I loved the way the stuff went on, and have them in the same plug bag as Etex plugs and I am noticing a difference in durability. I haven't written it off yet and want to give it more time before I draw a conclusion since I probably can't expect the crabcoat to hold up as well as an epoxy finish. Testing still in process. Results to follow.... Check back in a couple months.

I tried the crabcoat on some new teak rodholders. Washed with sudsy ammonia, dried and gave them 3 coats of crabcoat. That was in June. The finish is in pretty bad shape now. I think the UV rays did a job on it.
BTW, I did use the sealer from crabcoat also. I understand I was working with teak, and, not many finishes will be compatable with teak.
I really hope it works on the plugs.

The few that I still have after many snap offs from lousy braid, roller catches, and even some fish, I like it, will continue using it. 3 coats is the key, which still takes less than half the time Etex does. I have quite a few plugs of my own making, as well as from others, coated with Etex that are blistering and chipping. 1 split clear in half after just 2 outings, from water intrusion, from a blister chip.

My dad spent some time experimenting with the crabcoat, plugs were prone to peeling. Lately we've been experimenting with a high grade marine epoxy...
