Default trailer hook

Hi all

I have a question about trailer hook size. Should the trailer be the same size as the main hook or a size or 2 smaller???

p.s. how do you set a hook? I've caught quite a few rockfish this fall, from 18 to 31 inches everyone of them once in the boat the hook came out without my help. I've had lots of hits, fight for a while, then fish gone, I think its me not setting the hook properly pls help!!!!

First of all, welcome to the site!!

What kind of hook are you using? Is this a bait rig, or are you running a trailer hook behind a plug? A little more info would be helpful

I usually go with a 5/0, dressed or siwash, as some call 'em on most of my plugs.

Im refering to 4-8 oz bucktails with 9" shads with the trailer in the shad too.

what im wondering is if the bucktail hook is a 10/0 would it be better to use a 9/0 or 10/0 trailer hook????

Its obviously different trolling large bucktails. I dont do it so Im not much help with that but make sure your hooks are sharp and cross there eyes when you get a bite. Im sure someone has a technique for securing the trailer hook.

BTW welcome MRD.
