Section 4:

It shall be unlawful to keep striped bass alive in the water by attaching a line or chain to the fish or placing the fish in a live well or holding car. Striped bass are measured from the tip of the snout or jaw (mouth closed) to the farthest extremity of the tail.
FYI: evisceration - to remove the entrails from; disembowel
These seem to conflict

322 CMR 6.07 (7) (e)
(7) Prohibitions. It shall be unlawful for:
(e) a recreational fisherman to mutilate any striped bass in such a way as to interfere with or affect a proper and adequate measurement of the fish; such mutilation shall be prima facie evidence of a violation of this section


Note: Permitted party/charter vessel operators may fillet striped bass for their customers.
See 322 CMR 6.07 (4)(g) for details.
(g) For-hire vessels permitted under the authority of 322 CMR 7.01(4) may fillet or process legal sized striped bass for their recreational customers at sea provided that: 1. not more than four fillets taken from legal striped bass, minimum of 28" total length, are in possession for each customer of that trip representing the equivalent of two fish per customer; the skin must be left on the fillet; and 2. the total number of striped bass onboard the fishing vessel does not exceed twice the number of persons.

Yes they do...Welcome to Beaurocracy.

They just want to be able to measure the fish you have in possesion. As long as you leave the head and tail on the body, your good to go. Gut it, bleed it, scale it,.....just don't get caught with fillets or bodies with no heads.

People fillet fish every day of the week during the season at the Salisbury ramp. It stinks there at low tide because of all the bass carcasses. This has been going on for years there. I think the EPO's are looking the other way on this one. At least in that area.

And I thought all the idiots were here in TN. Below Pickwick they go into the bath room during winter to clean fish and TVA will close it for around 3 weeks to teach a lesson. I wish they would keep it closed. We have the same problems down here that this thread is about. People taking too many fish....making one heck of a mess around boat ramps....sidewalks. I don't know what the answer is to this problem. I know one of the game wardens at Pickwick and they are constantly in court to testify against a guys 3rd or 4th offense. One guy was heading to the car with 8...and 2 of them were less than our legal size. He was fined 1,500$ and he has done this before. I want these fish to be around for my grand children. We have enough problems with Big Head Carp and Snake Heads. Not much we can do about them but one would think we could stop the human mis-deeds.

I wonder if the solution would be to install cleaning stations at the ramps...similar to what most marinas have? Then at least the carcasses could go back in the water to feed the food chain.
