Montezuma, IN ? Fishermen charter The Indiana Striped Bass Association and elect officers at 1st annual Stripers Bash

On June 11th, 2006 the newly formed Indiana Striped Bass Association held their charter meeting and picnic at Cecil Harden Reservoir. The ISBA is a group of avid striped bass anglers committed to the conservation and preservation of the striped bass and hybrid bass fisheries in Indiana. The ISBA?s main goal is to promote and preserve striper fishing through better education and conservation practices. Newly elected club president, Dwight Scifres commented: ?this organization intends to be a positive force in Indiana sport fishing by raising funds to assist the Indiana DNR in stocking efforts and in helping conduct studies to sustain and improve striper and hybrid (wiper) fishing in our state.? With the enthusiastic support of those present at its 1st annual Striper Bash, the new club has already begun projects to help educate fishermen in proper catch and release methods, fish identification and successful fishing techniques.

Although the ISBA does intend to hold tournaments in the future at different lakes and reservoirs here in Indiana, they are committed to making sure that these activities have a minimal impact on the fisheries. According to Dwight Scifres: ?the group intends to only hold tournaments during the cooler months when the opportunity exists to exercise successful catch and release procedures. Also we are committed to use innovative ways in conducting tournaments to optimize fish survival with the goal of having 100 percent no kill tourneys.?

Braving damp weather, thirty-five people were in attendance at the inaugural ?Striper Bash? including Mark ?Willie? Williams, multi-species fishing guide; John Koonsman publisher of Hoosier Angler Magazine; Jim Burkett of Gander Mountain in Castleton; and Dave Misiora of D&L Sporting Goods.

After a traditional cookout and pitch-in meal, new members elected the following as officers of the club:

President - Dwight Scifres
Vice President -Mark ?Willie? Williams
Secretary - Jon M. Hughey
Treasurer- Denny Todd
Sgt of Arms- Greg Yazel

Several ISBA sponsors graciously provided over $1,000 worth of striped bass fishing lures, rods, reels and other items that were given away as door prizes. Everyone at the meeting won something nice such as rods, reels, lures, planer boards, hats and other items. Sponsors of this event who contributed to the prizes are:

The official ISBA club website is under construction with a launch date planned for June 21, 2006. It will be launched while still under construction, however it will contain ample information for those interested in the club and striped bass fishing to evaluate the purpose and goals of this organization. According to Jon Hughey, ISBA Secretary and Site Webmaster: ?The site will be filled with information of interest to both experienced striper hunters and neophytes alike. Through the website the beginner can learn invaluable information about getting rigged up for this specialized style of fishing. He will also have access to a continual range of tips on current hotspots and techniques.? Said Scifres: ?you don?t have to be experienced in the ways of the striper. Just visit the site, join the club and get started fishing for the big boys!?
