need help with abu garcia c3 6500

Another member from this site recommended this reel to me for surf and pier fishing. Does anyone know what would be a good rod length for this reel..(I'd like to keep it around 8-9 ft) and what pound braid can it handle? I'd like to use this setup for chunking macs and jigging. Any advice would be very helpful

I am familiar with baitcast reels. I use one for freshwater with 12lb mono. And sometimes braided line so getting used to a saltwater shouldn't be that difficult aside from the size. I fuess I'd rather just get a heavier duty rod for chunking and also use it for jigging I guess rather than getting a rod that is to light duty. Seeing as u seem like a veteran with saltwater fishing what lb test line would you use with the ag6500 in braid with a 9 ft rod? Also should I get a heavy actiod rod seeing as ill be using it with 4oz weights and heavy bait?

There are many differing opinions on braided lines. Just about anyone you ask will have a different favorite. Personally, I like a heavier braid on my 6500's as it is easier for me to prevent backlash when casting and easier to pick out tangles when they do occur occasionally. I have 65lb test Suffix Performance Braid on the reel I use with my 4-8oz rated bait rod, and 30lb test original Fireline on the reels I use on lighter rods for plugs & jigs. I also use a long mono shock leader when casting heavy jigs & bait/weight. The leader should be tied directly to the braid (I use a modified albright knot) and long enough to be wrapped a few times around the spool when casting. Do a search for "shock leader" and you'll probably find quite a few threads discussing their importance.
