The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
I have yet to cast a single chunk of bait or plug yet, but i have a question about a single piece of equipment, the White Bucket. It appears this one and only object sparks great disdain from many on the site, but im not sure why. Its seems to be a convienent way to transport bait, a comfortable seat if necessary, etc. Is its use discouraged because of the Type of people who use them, or is it a sign, like training wheels on quad?

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
If you're catching bass, then who cares?
white buckets make a good eel carrier, just drill some holes in it first, so the ice and slime can drain.
Sort of makes me wonder: rules that get laid down in form of "never do this _______". OK, says who? I'm sure those same people would have called Al McReynolds a fool for fishing 20lb ande with a stupid rebel lure off a jettie the day he caught a 78# bass.
It's not to say don't take advice from people. I'm saying don't let anybody tell you that you can't fish a certain way because it's wrong. Just go fishing!

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
Thank you, im glad to know that not everything should be "just such a way". I have been doing as much research as possible over the last few weeks, asking buddies and such. Yet no two people are the same. I can only hope to spend enough time at the water to learn what's best for me.
Slow and steady.......

I use a bucket to carry extra gear when I go chunkin, I will have more than one rod most of the time also, and it does make a good seat to rest my boney butt!---LOUIE

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
Well i,m a 71 year old bucket geek. Unless i,m walking the beaches i use buckets to bring stuff for each different Trip. I might bring 2-3 different buckets with #1 bottom gear#2 trolling gear#3 plugging gear and i might change gear each day from different buckets and with a quick glance i can see what i have.

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
As you can see, the white bucket is more of a bait fisherman's tool. Fishing with bait isn't as cool as fishing with lures. It's still a technique that many big bass can be taken with . . . along with everything else in the atlantic: eels, skates, dogfish, the ocasional cod, sea robbins, etc. The inglorious bottom feeders / shit fish.
100 years ago, they used to chum the water for bass with lobster tails! If you had a five gallon bucket filled with short lobsters, you'd make friends with every bait drifting fisherman around! That's old school though. There aren't as many fish around now, so you would most likely be better off preparing the lobster as table fair.
Anyways, bait and plugs are too different types of fishing with bulls and bears on both sides. The locus point between the two would be fishing with eels.

Dragging a bucket or cooler around limits your mobility.
Soon as I see a bucket I figure it's a "chuck n luck" guy.

EXACTLY!
It's my "sign".
Sorta like a "Don't follow me I'm lost and happy" thang.
Love my white bucket that was red but had to paint white to qualify.

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
When things are slow and I do bait fish I use a soft cooler with a plastic hard insert. It has a front pocket which holds my hooks, leaders, bait knife and sinkers. It holds about 8 or 9 bunker with a little ice. The insert comes out for easy cleaning. And it has a comfy shoulder strap which makes it easy to carry on a longer haul. They also make bigger ones if you want to haul more bait. But it beats the crap out of a big bucket.I do use a 2 bucket system for storing eels for a couple of days. But when I get to my spot I usually toss them in a small soft sided cooler or an eel bag. 5/0 showed me the soft sided cooler trick and it works great. It also holds my hooks and leaders.

Re: The Frowned Upon White Bucket?
i always have a white bucket in the car.....
it holds my cast net. if i am inclined to liveline bunker then, i will use it to keep em alive for a while and or to carry off the beach to the cooler. the only shame in using one is being seen by fellow surfcasters/anglers.. it is only good to chit in if you march a mile down the beach to a secluded spot and have had taco's/burrito's/with 3 coffee's and a cheese danish for lunch..then i suggest avioding the waders alltogether. i sharted once with waders on and the walk back to the car - and drive to Mcdonalds hurt my back from holding my cheeks together for so long.....the white bucket could have it's purposes but, overall? i'd not wanna be caught dead with a white bucket on my person.
