Beginner on the Cape
I am new to fishing for stripers. I live in Harwich Port, MA on the cape. I have asked around and have a few good spots on Nantucket Sound. My question is: my reel is old and when I drag the lure in the reels clicks. Is this scaring the fish away?

What kind of reel is it? Conventional or spinning reel.

its a Daiwa 125, the guy at the local bait store said they stopped making it 15 years ago. once I get a few stripers on the dinner table, i'll spring for a better one.
also, do you guys bring always bring ice/ice chest with you? if not, how do you keep fish fresh? I'm trying to nail down the necessities of what to take with me, how to carry it, and how to process the catch afterward.

My Cape season is Just about done for the year but Stay on the board maybe next year we can head out. I tend to fish in P-Town a lot. Best of Luck

When I surf cast in the Cape and want to keep a fish I dig a trench in the sand and bury it until I'm ready to go. Make sure you mark your treasure though! If you catch a blue you need to ice it or at least bleed it out quickly if you are going to keep it.

thanks. I went again last night, decided to try the incoming tide rather that the outgoing tide. Only got i one bite that got away, it was small by the feel of it.
Is it better to fish between 2 jetties at the mouth of a harbor, or out near the end of the jetty?

I'm also fishing on Nantucket. Its been hard to find where the stripers are most present though. Not sure where they are now or the best tides to fish at.

i've been fishing Brant point every morning first light this week, no hits, but I have seen fish break surface. Last summer the spot was quite successful, I think the water is just not cold enough.
If you see me, I'm always wearing a Nantucket red hat, just shout out "Ed" and I'll help you out. Its better to give info in person than online so you can see what I'm talking about.

Brant Point, Nantucket? If so, I'm across the sound in Harwich, I fish the jetties of Allen Harbor.

Help! Please help out a newbie, we were all beginners at some point.
I am going out on the Cape, Nantucket Sound, 1 hr after PM high tide, between 2 jetties at the mouth of a harbor. I am using an 8" RONZ, with a steel leader, casting and slowly retreiving. I move up and down the jetty, to the end, in heavy surf, inside with almost still water. I also use a Bomber with no luck.
What am I doing wrong?

The steel leader. Use 50 or 60 pound mono leader.
Try different tide stages.
Also try live eels at night near low water.
Learn how to bucktail the inlet. Read, Read and reread some more. Then fish, fish and fish some more.
