that reel won't hold alot of 20# mono but will pack enough braid. but off jetties and rocks braid can be your best friend or a nightmare. the drag is superb and overkill so no problem there. i would get a sturdy (dunkable) reel that could take a beating on the rocks/jetties/river. that rod is flimsy imo. but for what you are able to afford get an ebay deal on a penn 704 or even a mitchell reel in a medium range. a 300 is too small (not that it won't muscle a fish in) i can't tell you what to do, i can only suggest.

i have 2 704z's, but i feel like that thing is huuge on the tsunami airwave, it barely fits into the hold lol. What about the boca's or surges or the other cheaper quantums baitrunner?? obviously not as top notch quality but are they significantly worse?

ive always just used 20# mono on both the 850ss and 704z's, so im just bouncin around new ideas for the lighter rod's reel and line. u said braid can be ur worst nightmare??

See if you cant get a Penn 650 or 6500ss.
Just dont lean on the handle with any bigger fish.

still a big reel for that rod. i was not actu'all'y referring to matching that rod with anything. a 5500ss reel will (if new) work fine with that rod but with the kind of punishment you will be giving it. it's bad issues are above mentioned as well as the bail will eventually start to flip closed on the cast (a tweak in the bending of bail wire fixes that but not entirely). the issues with any smaller penn reels (ss line) are the line rollers get screwed up. don't buy any of the silver series or cs models or any other penn piece of crap as they are a mistake. the 5500ss is a durable reel and you will see them on most every charter going in and out of the marina. sometimes you have to spend a little money to get something that will last as opposed to the trial and error approach.

i know that much not to go with the new penns. But i get the jist of it zim, go big (price and quality) or go home...

The Boca are good reels for the price.

no no and no.pay attention grasshopper.........
the smaller quantum reels are not for big fish (not that they cannot handle a heavier fish than what the pound test line specs call for but this is not where ya wanna fail, fishing for big bass. the cabo 40 will work fine, if ya wanna save money and say I CAN'T spend that much, then i say
"there are them that say i can't

in which case both are always right.
but only one will learn an expensive lesson grasshopper.
