Anglers will get their last chance this winter to catch a host of fishing and boating seminars under one roof when the 18th Annual New Jersey Boat Show opens Thursday at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison.
Fifteen seminars will be presented by The Fisherman magazine, covering everything from fishing for fluke in the back bays and tuna offshore to docking a boat and getting a captain's license.
Kevin McLaughlin, director of the show, said he is pleased with the array of seminars and the lineup of more than 375 boats displayed by 40 dealers.
"If you are buying a boat for this summer, this is the time to get your order in," he said. "This is the last show of the season and the final chance to take advantage of the incentives manufacturers offer to generate a last burst of orders."
McLaughlin, who is vice president of Mac Events, Spring Lake, said more than 70 boat lines will be on display, and the convention center will be jammed with everything from personal watercraft to 35-foot offshore cruisers.
There will be more than 100 booths featuring ancillary services, including brokerage and insurance companies, marinas, repair services, trailer companies, fishing equipment and marine electronics.
The Fisherman magazine's free "how-to" clinics will get under way an hour after the show opens at 1 p.m. Thursday with veteran angler Milt Rosko offering 60 minutes of tips and advice on fishing for weakfish, stripers, fluke and blues from New York Harbor to Barnegat Bay.
Jim Hutchinson Jr., managing editor of the magazine, will follow at 3:30 p.m. with a lecture on fishing with bunker chunks for striped bass. Capt. Bob Figular, Mariner School, will speak at 7 p.m. on what is required to get a captain's license.
Capt. Russ Binns, veteran angler and owner of Coast Boating School, will offer advice at 2 p.m. Friday on buying a boat. J. B. Kasper, Delaware River fishing guide and outdoor writer, will offer tips and tactics on fishing for stripers in the big river at a seminar scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Capt. Gene Quigley, Shore Catch Guide Service, will talk about catching trophy stripers at a seminar to be held at 7 p.m.
Saturday is the big day for instruction with six seminars scheduled. Capt. Terry Sullivan, Mercury and Pure Fishing saltwater pro, will lecture at 11 a.m. on fishing with sonar and electronics to improve catches.
Capt. Gene Nigro, skipper of the charter boat Phantom, will talk about jigging, trolling and boating Raritan Bay stripers from spring through fall at a seminar set for 12:30 p.m.
Capts. Rich Tenreiro and Andy LoCascio, Northeast Angling television, will lecture at 2 p.m. on advanced fishing for fluke. Capt. Phil Sciortino Jr., Tackle Box Sportfishing, will follow at 3 p.m. with a talk on weakfish tactics, covering everything from fishing the deep to use of bucktails and bait.
Fred Gamboa, angler and outdoor writer, will talk at 4:30 p.m. on catching the grand slam - striped bass, fluke, blues and weakfish - in one day. Capt. Russ Cohen, BoatBoy Marina, will follow at 6 p.m. with tips on docking a boat, and handling the worst docking situations.
The program will end Sunday with a trio of seminars. Capt. Bob Kamienski, charter boat Kingfisher III, and Capt. Brandon Kamienski, Calusa Nets, will lecture at 11:30 a.m. on fishing live bait for stripers and the art of throwing a cast net.
Jeff Merrill, veteran offshore angler and St. Croix Rods pro staffer, will talk at 1 p.m. on offshore trolling, covering everything from spreader bars and jets to trolling patterns and techniques. John Luchka, Ameripack and Penn pro staffer, will lecture at 3 p.m. on trolling for stripers.
Irwin Marine of Red Bank will be at the show with a full line of Four Winns' Horizon sport boats running from 17 to 28 feet.
John Matteo, sales manager for Irwin, said the model he is most excited about is the 190 Horizon.
"This is the hottest model in the line," he said. "It's 19 feet with fantastic lines. It's sexy but affordable. This is a family runabout that's great for bays and lakes, and it's a fantastic ski boat."
Matteo said Irwin is offering a free engine upgrade from a 4.3 liter to a Volvo 5.0 liter V-8 motor with any purchase of a 190 Horizon at the show.
The show will be open from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
