bought a new reel, line advise plz

I just picked up a cabela's salt stalker spinning reel ss50 and i was wonder if i should spool it up with 300yd of 50lb braided line or is 150yd of it enough? This reel is for pier fishing and maybe some bank fishing. Also the reel is rated at 10/440, 12/390, 15/280

I'd stick with 150 yds. Braid is kinda expensive and you will probably never have a fish take more than 150 yds. of line from you. Spool the reel with some mono first to prevent slippage and to take up some room on the reel. Then top it off with your braid (about 1/8in from the edge of the spool) and you should be good to go. If you do it this way then you'll be saving a ton of braid to use in the future.

1st off welcome to the site... Now to your question, Id spool it with roughly 75 yards of 20# Mono backing just as Brian said but I would fill that reel with 300 yards of #40 or 50 PowerPro... You might never get a fish that will take more than 150 yards, but with a decent cast and some current you could be out of Braid rather quickly and thats not a situation I would want to deal with...

you may take a small amount of 20# mono and tie the 300 yds of braid to it with an albright just to give the braid something to bite into. wet the braid so it goes on tighter and don;t spare the expense. you can afford to lose some of it on a windloop but with 150 yds you are done for in that case. if you have the patience you can wind the braid on first and see how much of mono you will need to spool on first by what is left on the spool. this step is a one shot deal as you then will always know how much mono no matter what test it is to spool up before the spool of braid goes on. you can even spool on the mono second without tying it and that will give you the proper amount, mark the mono, unspool back onto it;s original packaging and unspool the braid back out. put the mono on till the mark is seen and tie the braid to it and spool up. this is the long drawn out way as you can always eyeball it but will lose some braid or not have enough. your spool can be marked as well for future reference. sometimes patience is a virtue. i have none left however
