Good morning everyone. I am new to this site and this is my first post.
I will be going out on a party boat (Hel-Cat out of Groton, CT) for stripers next week. I purchased a new rod and reel and was wondering how to correctly set up a diamond jig.
Question: Do you use a swivel between the main mono line and a flouro leader?
Question: What knot do you tie the leader to the diamond jig/ bucktail with?
Thanks for all your help and loom forward to participating on this site.
Diamond jigs are made to flutter on the way down, which causes line twists. A swivel attached to a heavy leader material is a must IMO. The way I tie mine is I tie a 30" leader to a swivel and I tie a dropper loop about 1/2 way down the leader to attach a teaser (any striped bass teaser will do). At the end of the leader I tie on a duolock snap for easy lure changing in order to quickly change weights or colors.
This rig also works perfectly as a bomber/teaser rig, so when the blues and bass are close to the top, just clip on a bomber or any plug of your choice!
i was never an advocate for too much in the way of knots/swivels/snaps... on any setup. add a split ring to jig with a swivel and tie uni knot to swivel (palomar if using braid) and it's one knot instead of three "or four technically if you add the dropper loop" no snap to open (i know,,, snap never opens on me zim...). fishing on a party boat with a teaser hanging off the leader will piss me off if i'm addressing a tangle in your line. adding a stinger hook is also good with bluefish around. alot of times the stinger will hook the devil before he cuts you off. but jigging is like that. you lose some you win some. not sure where your going but in some instances you'd be wise to ask in advance what to bring in the way of tins.. i would take a steel leader with a snap on the end in the event you run into bluefish for a little while. there is no reason you should be handicapped if put on bluefish for a bit.
