i don't own a 704 but i think most people use 20lb mono
or 20-30lb fireline
ive heard pwrpro does not work well with those reels

PowerPro on a 704 is a windknot in waiting and if you get an bad spool (not an uncommon occurrence) you'll get to enjoy many mystery breakoffs yup, I hate the stuff

Everyone uses 20 Fireline on 704 and 706's along with most of the other '70's style surf reels made before the advent of braid.

If you mostly fish open beaches 14# is also a good choice and will give you longer casts

Remember, Fireline breaks at almost double it's rated strength.

i don't have a problem with pp on a 704...
i'm not sure why all the windknot issues but me thinks i know what would cause one "been there before". everything is fixable when you've goofed up enough. i never ever got a windloop that i could not fix with pp. that said, one should never ever get one to begin with. i like pp and although i'm not ashamed to say that this klutz and line don't get along in any venue. i don't lose fish with the stuff.

What do you mean its no good? Too much memory? Or doesnt cast as well as you would like? - Likely both.

20 pound mono is perfect for that reel. Dont overfill the spool.
Or use fireline as suggested. I use the crystal on one and 20 lb ande mono on another.

I myself have only got a few wind knots, maybe 2 or 3. I have been using braid for years. To help prevent them always cast with your spool in furthest out postion. When you close bail and start to reel pull line onto roller(all in one step). Before you cast your next cast always run your finger over the outer edge of spool, most of your wind knots come from a loop or spool face crossing. If you have either do not cast out but drop plug/bait on ground and walk out or pull out line. I always try to keep a little tension on line till the reel picks up weight of plug or bait/tackle. This as seemed to work for me.
Also my 704 seems to have a very heavy bail spring and my handle hardly moves while casting. I also while flipping bail like to have my handle in down position(mine is also timed so this is the furthest out the spool will be) Seems like alot but if you get into the habit of doing this it all becomes second nature.

I say go down to 20lb or less mono or go with braid. My rods have 12 and 17 lb sufix elite on them and the only problems I've had where bluefish teeth. I've even had 80 Lb Flouro leader chewed thru.

I would say for that reel skip the braid, and go for the 20# mono.

The entire Spinfisher series is extremely happy with 20# Fireline
Remember to spool it 1/8th inch below the lip of the spool. When guys have windknot trouble it's almost always because they loaded too much line on it.

I use the 30 on my 704 and it is an outstanding pairing. Last weekend i was fishing with fireline and literally wondered why I ever used anything else. The stuff is outstanding.

use a smaller lb test like 20 with ur drag set so you can get the fish in.when the fish is about 8 ft from the boat he will likley wanna take off make sure the drag isnt to tight and keep weariing him out
