my friend says that the rigged 9 inch sluggo will outfish a live eel any night on the beach. any truth to this?

That would be a neat trick and I assume he's talking about fish over 25~thirty.....Pounds!
I wish the Zen master could teach me how to jig Bucktails that effectivly cause when the eel mandatorium takes effect we'll all be using bucktails.

There's a local sharpie here in Rhode Island named Steve McKenna who says that sluggos are as good as live eels and he's caught many, many cows to prove it. I've seen pictures of some of his catches including a picture of him holding twin 40 lbers he caught on them.

In R.I. he's known as pretty much THE authority on rigging and fishing sluggos.

If you go to saltwateredge they have a linc to a couple of videos by Steve on how to rig and fish the 9" sluggo.

I know the guy personally and he's a nice guy who has no problem sharing his hard won knowledge on catching striped bass.

Tight lines
Brad

Never...ever... ever.. will a hunk of rubber out fish a live or even a rigged eel.... I use all three.. and have been doing it longer than most.... when the fishing is fast/easy... sluggos, surf hogs, hogys and real eels all produce well, and I use them... but when the fish are fussy and the money is on the line.... live is best and you're a fool if you think otherwise....

Brad
Steve Mckenna is a real gentleman and a hell of a surfcaster/fisherman but unfortunately his surfcasting days may be over due to health problems. He hasnt been on Saltwater edge in 2 years - A professional site with quality content and products btw
Steve reenforces his eels rigs different than the standard rigs, the latest of which is the 12 inch sluggo. His you tube videos are in the how to forums along with Joes "roccus" live eel videos. Steve has contemplated makeing the transition to boat fishing because of his health.
I have also seen Steve with quite a few large fish on rigged sluggos. Ive also seen Roccus with that many large fish in one week with live eels.
I think Roccus has caught two or three 50s already this season and a few more just ounces shy.
Not taking anything away from anyone using sluggos but no one on this planet has more big fish on sluggos - than roccus has on live eels.
Not even close.
Back to Steves rigging. For the 12" sluggos he uses - 9/0 hook in the front and a 7-0 in the rear- octopus off-set are tied together with 70lb dacron

For reference purposes
