Re: 2021 striper reports
Well....I can safely say that the majority of the fish have exited the river and like last year they left fast. Yesterday in the cold/rain we marked fish but the bite was absolutely shut down. Today was a nice day but the fish were sparce from Poughkeepsie all the way down to West Point. We managed to pick a few off in the Milton area at the end of the evening Ebb into early Flood tide but these fish have no interest in feeding as they are booking out of the river. Basically they hit the bait and if you don't hook them immediately they move on. These last 2 years I have learned that its not water temp, moon phase or weather that drives them out of the river....basically I think these fish are programmed to stay in the river for a certain amount of time....about 6-8 weeks....and if they arrive early they will leave early....fast. Today the river temps were only 62 degrees but we had a mild winter so they came early. This was the first April I can remember getting double digit numbers of fish in a day. We are wrapping up the season and pulling the boat next weekend getting ready for salt. We will drive the boat from Marlboro back up to Albany and scout the whole river to get an idea of what is left.
