VHF weather channel?

I would really like to be able to avoid navigating through seas like I did the other day. I have a new standard horizon VHF radio on the boat and I'm sure there is a channel to tune in to that will give weather updates and changes but I don't know which one. Could anyone tell me what channel that is for NY?

Most VHF radios have a pre set series of weather chanels... usualy marked WTX or WX, just hit the button.... then adjust to the one closest to your area...

I also find the weather chanel on TV to be quite helpfull, check out the big picture,it gives you the high and low pressure systems and which way they are moving, then coupled with your local weather you can make an accurate assessment of the weather, unfortunatly, NOAA weather is often a "little" off, your best bet is to become your own weather man using a combination of stations, then making your own judgement... I've saved myself many a beating by doing just that...

Every time I go out, I always check the marine forecast and more then a handful of times they have been way off. I know you have told me in the past that it should be used more as a guide...
