Default River Basin update today ...

Catskill / Hudson River Striper Update – Wednesday, April 16, 2008

NEW STRIPED BASS CONTEST RECORD – Our 21st ANNUAL STRIPED BASS CONTEST has set yet another record - a total of 469 anglers signed up to participate in 2008. We want to thank all the anglers that have shown such interest in participating in our “rite of spring” and wish them success on their fishing trips.

Of course, as most of you are aware all of the registration monies are paid back to our contestants as awards – it is a 100% payback. Additionally the total amount of payback far exceeds what is taken in by our registration process thanks to the Greene County Tourism Department kicking in additional funds for prizes.

This year we had decided to pay back a total of 6 slots for the largest stripers brought in for the contest. However, since we have so many entrants we’ve added two additional “honorable mention” spots for payback as you’ll see in the schedule below.

2008 RIVER BASIN CONTEST PAYBACK SCHEDULE

1) $3,797.00
2) 1.290.00
3) 986.00
4) 683.00
5) 455.00
6) 379.00
7) 50.00
8) 50.00

THE NEW YEAR IS OF TO A GOOD START -
It looks like we’ve gotten off to an early start with our striped bass run this year. The first of the stripers arriving in our Catskill area were reported on Monday, April 7th. Even though we’ve seen earlier arrivals than this in the past the number of catches reported so far certainly seems to be greater than we can recall. The river appears to be in great shape for the striper run and the water temp has been between 44 and 46 degrees for the past week – ideal for the stripers to move northward. Judging from the strength of the run so far everything appears to be about a whole week earlier than normal, perhaps a harbinger of a great run to come.

Most of the feeder creeks are experiencing striper runs. We’ve had good reports from the Rondout (Kingston) all the way up to the Stockport Creek (5 mi. north of Catskill). As of this time the farthest upriver catches we have heard about are from the Stockport Creek area and there seems to have been quite a few fish caught. Most of these early fish have been between 24 and 31 inches but there have been a couple of non-verified reports in the 39 inch range.

Down in the Kingston area Harry P. reports having good action using live herring. Mike D. reports getting his first striper of the year from the Glasco flats – small but very satisfying. Although we have yet to hear from the Malden area, the Cheviot and Germantown locations are all reporting some sporadic action – mostly smaller stripers as of yet. Around Catskill there have been a few fish reported from the Catskill Creek (running at about 51 degrees) and yet others taken from the main river on what is often referred to locally as the “bridge run” (the west channel edge starting from the Catskill launch ramp and extending to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge). Just about all these fish have been below 30 inches in length.

The baits of choice for the anglers so far have been herring (live or salted chunk) and bloodworms. Although we’ve received no reports so far of fish being taken on artificials that will probably start to change in about another week as more trollers take to the water. Around our area the lures of choice for the boaters appear to be (in order of flat-lined running depth with 14 lb. mono) standard billed Rapala Husky 13, Rapala floating standard #18, Bomber 17A (10 to 14 ft.); a little deeper – Bomber 25A and Rebel DJ30 (16 to 20 ft.); deeper yet – Bomber 26A and Mann’s Stretch 20 series. Remember that these lures will run the deepest when the boat is heading, as slow as possible, in the SAME DIRECTION as the tidal flow. You can lose up to 30 percent of your running depth when you go against the flow.

Although we’ve listed some of the favorite trolling lures above there still is no question that herring is the preferred bait for stripers. Presently we have a plentiful supply of the “legal-to-transport” prepared herring available for sale, either frozen or not. Remember that unless you get the commercially prepared stuff it is ILLEGAL to transport herring off the water. Regardless, the herring we are selling seems to work as well as anything else, including bloodworms… and perhaps even somewhat better due to the addition of salt in their preparation.

We are pleased to tell you that the Catskill launch ramp floats are now half in. These are of sufficient length to enable you to launch and retrieve your boats. Still – do use caution there.

Herring appear to have made it all the way up to Albany already and it appears that this will be a banner year for the herring catch, although admittedly it is still way too early to tell. The first of the herring showed up here in the Catskill area on Sunday, April 6th. Dennis N. reported spotting some of these baits swimming up in Troy’s Postenkill a week later, on the 13th.

The striper run appears to be off to a great start. We want to remind you that whatever we report here is a compilation of all the reports we receive from you, the fishermen. We are lucky that we have so many of you reporting thereby enabling us to see trends developing for the river as a whole and not just making a judgement from one guy reporting his catch from his secret spot. To that effect we ask that you let us know what you are observing – send us your fishing report at “tomgriver at yahoo.com”. Please use this e-address just to post reports.
