I used the 60/40 mix and soaked them for 20 min, then let them dry for a week. I cant remember if i used sanding sealer after or not. I think some i did and some i didnt. but most of them bled.

another possibility is the wood itself wasnt dry, if the moisture content was high, that could have delayed the drying of the BLO mixture....

A good test is to lightly sand the plug, if no dust arrises and the wood sticks to the sand paper, good chance the plug needs more time to "cure" I've done hundreds of plugs this way, only once did I have an issue, and it was with maple that soaked for 24 hours, the next batch I gave 2 weeks to cure and they were perfect....

Anothe rthing you can do to check to see if the BLO mixti=ure is dry is to heat the plug with a hair dryer, once the plug is warm, if the BLO isnt dry, an oily residue will rise to the surface of the plug, if it does, wipe it dry and give the plug a few more days....

Also are you wiping the excess oil off the surface of the plug after you reemove it from the mixture?

Hi Roccus,

Great thread! After reading this I really can't wait for my plug kits to arrive. I had one question how do you attach the lip to the plug? Do you just epoxy it in? Thanks

I make my lip slots snug, by adding a tight tail wrap, the lip will stay in place nicely, for those with less confidense a little 2 ton ( 60 minute epoxy, 5 minuter is not good in water) will hold it nicely, or you can assemble you plug, put straws over the swivels and allow some of your epoxy that you cover the plug with to fill in around the lip slot... lots of options...

I can't see any of the pictures that are attached to this thread. My "[IMG] code is ON" is on. The pictures display fine in some threads on this forum. I know that I've seen the pictures in this thread before because that's probably what drew me here to begin with.

Any thoughts as to why the images aren't showing for me now?

Thanks!
cm

I used the E-tex spray for about 2 years, unfortunately, it became hard to come by... after reading the ingredients, trying a few other brands ( and having issues along the way) I went back to my roots... back in the day, I used alot of lacquer paint and clear coat( still do on prototypes).... I tried a test sample and was pleasantly surprised.... the lacquer, provides a durable under coat that adheres tenaciously to the acrylic paint with out ruining it... it seals the paint well and provides a perfect base for the etex to cling to.. no more dry spots... no more bubbles around the eyes and grommets...., and if you drop a plug prior to etexing, it wont be scratched or damaged... hell, I've kicked them across the shop ( by accident) and picked them up, wiped them down with alcohol swaps and proceeded like nothing happend... that never would have worked with any other scratch coat or just plain paint...

roc im looking to get the same lathe... which drill chuck do you use...

and also to any one who seals with epoxy to seal do you need to heat seal or can you just cover it up with a thin coat and spin then paint... trying to find the best method for me to seal and not looking to use BLO
