Default Abu Garcia 6500 C3

I picked up a 6500 C3 last weekend. Loaded it up with 20# fireline (with a little mono backing of course) and tossed a 1oz bank sinker a few times this morning to try it out. First impression, not a bad little casting reel. The bait clicker seems a little flimsy, but other than that it feels really tight and smooth. Definately going to take a little bit to get used to this St. Croix rod, a little faster action than I'm used to, but I did manage some pretty decent casts and didn't have any backlashing problems. It'll get a proper workout soon

I got a 6500 last season, I don't get the same distance with it as I do with spinning gear so all I use it for know is fluking.

With the right rod and practice you should be able to throw the 6500 considerably farther then with spinning gear.

First thing to do with an older Abu - swap out the drag washers - the old style washers were the reels Achilles heel. The new Abu Carbonex washers blow the old ones away.

Should

You'll know for sure the first time you have a 15+ lb fish on. If the drag is smooth and consistent with a gentle take off then you have the new washers.

If it's herky jerky and goes from too weak to too tight with nothing in the middle, it's the old washers.

Crack it open and take a look, while it's open polish the metal washers till you can see yourself in em - makes a surprisingly large difference.

Sudsy- I got the reel with an offshore angler, gold cup rod (bass pro shop brand) its 7' rated for 12-25 pound line, and 3/4-3oz lures and pretty stiff.
Do you have a suggestion on a rod that would be better for one just learning to use conventional gear?

i just picked up the carbon drag washers for my 6500 and 7000, as well as the ceramic bearings for my 7000.....omg...what a difference...it was also reccomended to me to use penn synthetic reel oil..one drop on each bearing....khary23...i asked the guy i bought the parts from what he thinks a good rod for the 6500 would be...he builds custim rods as well and he says he uses a few..between 8 and 9 1/2 foot custom lamiglass and one he uses is a st croix...looks like i need a rod for mine now too..as i have a gold cup also, 7' 6" 1to3 oz lure weight.

khary,

I must have missed this question, sorry, my bad.

What kind of fishing are you doing and how big a rod do you need ?

Surf plugging favorites of mine are the 10' Star Nickelite (unfortunately discontinued) and the Allstar Breakaway LDFC 119-2 (also unfortunately discontinued)

That being said, I haven't thrown the conventional model yet but based on throwing it spinning I expect the new AnyFish AnyWhere 11' Estuary rod to every bit as good as those two but for less money and easily available.

Sudsy

Just re found this post. I got the reel to use for bottom fishing as well as casting for bass. I have gotten better with casting it, but find it harder to work certain, baits with the way you have to hold the rod with the reel on top. So I now only use it for bottom fishing or chunking for bass.
