Brees has been pretty good as well although his teams were poorer than others up until this year

But the question I ask myself is have they changed the game because of their skill. In that case I say Manning and Brady have.

Then championships. Both have won them although Brady is ahead in that category and I would consider them both on about equally talented teams.

I'd have a hard time choosing between Brady and Manning. I am a big Pats fan and love Brady but Manning just amazes me. Manning had better receivers for many years up until Brady got Moss and Welker

Perhaps a more neutral observer would be better to answer this one

Definitely not Favre. His season in MN is an aberrition this year. This is the first year he has been able to control himself and his long prayers. That has been the key to his success in MN.

Being a Pats fan I have to say Brady but I think he and manning given the same teams and the same coaching staffs would be fairly interchangeable. Same ability to pick up defenses same ability to look off receivers. Same drive to just plain win.

Thats a tough, tough question.
Like asking if you had to choose 1 QB to win one all time game.
Forget the team - all things being equal who would you pick first?
For one game today I probably would go Manning.
How could you go wrong with Brady.
I'd pick Brees third. Farve in his prime # 2. In this era.

Bart Starr and Stauback had quite a few rings but you wouldnt take either of them over this crew.
Dan Marino
Steve Young
John Elway
Joe Montana
John Unitis

I'd take Marino over all of them. Well Maybe not Montana. lol

Montana was great.

I never saw Unitas play

Young proved that the SF 49ers system was great so it takes a little of the luster off what Montana did

I loved the way Elway played and as a kid growing up I was in awe of Staubach and the cowboys in their day

Marino? great talent but could not win the big ones

Of the names mentioned thus far I'd say the top 3 are Montana, Brady, and Manning but not necessarily in that order

Manning could well be on his way to being the greatest QB ever, but he has a few more years to go before we know for sure.
Before the knee, Brady was on his way but after watching him blow chance after chance this year I'm not sure he's still in the running.

Right now the best of all time is still Bart Starr. (and FWIW, I'm neutral when it comes to the Packers, don't really care much one way or another)

In my book it's what's accomplished when it really counts that makes a great player and the postseason is when it really counts!
Starr was the best postseason passer in NFL history with a record 104.8 playoff passer rating during a time when an 80 rating was considered excellent.
His postseason interception rate was only 1.41 which is also a postseason record.
5 Championship rings
Everyone claims that it's because he was on a great rushing team but when they won the title three years in a row they were near the bottom in rushing, Starr's arm is what took them there.

Another very important fact to remember is that Starr played before all the rules that we have now to protect the QB and jack up offensive stats, There were no facemask penalties, eye gouging and head slapping were okay, horse collar tackles and chop blocking were perfectly aceptable, pass interference and roughing the passer barely existed if at all.................. and Starr still had the stats he had.

The drive that won the Ice Bowl was probably the greatest drive by any QB in NFL history. Starr went 5 for 5 then took the ball in himself for the winning TD
Yeah, yeah, Montana and "The Drive", all 92 yards, was great but that was on a beautiful 68 degree night - Starr did it on an 18 BELOW -0- night !! That's 86 degrees colder then the night Montana did it - that has to count for something!!

I vote Bart Starr

Wow Suds. I left Starr off cause I never seen him play. Sid Luckman or Tittle either. Great point and stats to back it.
The most amazing thing I seen from a QB - and Im sure there are others was Tarkenton Dribbling a football while scambling. He lost the handle on a bootleg - the ball bounced back up and then he dribbled it twice while moving, once he got a sure grip he completed the pass. Unreal.
I also saw him complete a pass to himself (first attempt batted back) and throw deep but it was waved off.
Maybe he doesnt belong up there with the first ballot group but a case could be made for just winning.

As much as I hate to say it I would have to say Brady or Manning. That being said, this weekend the old man will win down in NOLA and take the Vikes to the Superbowl. If this happens, I will change my vote the day after the Superbowl to Favre. Go Vikes!

i'm sorry.. but when the vote for the best qb ever is in question? the win column always is the factor. stats - ie; most yards - most touchdowns - ratings - yada yada yada......
the steel curtain//
the cowboys
the 49ers
patriots
all dynasty teams that "without the team" the qb really suffers.
so i'm not saying those qb's weren't great..
but on a mediocre team a qb CONSISTENTLY plays and puts up numbers and outlasts every other joe that has come and gone i say to you
who in thier right mind can dispute that THAT man is not the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.
let brady and manning play as long as he has and then i think manning may just get there. but for now, the true grit consistent quarterback who may have thrown way too many int.'s in his career, still remains the most durable (win or lose in NO)

Default Re: Best QB in the NFL?

i got carried away. last 5 years is manning if you go by stats. as brady was out hurt.
but last 5 years is not fair to favre as he has played 4 more years than manning and twice as many as brady.
here's how the stats play out in the long run.
montana clearly is the best ever in many eyes but....
joe played 174 total games
manning 176
brady 111 but only lost 24 games....
now,
only marino and elway come close to favre in that
elway played total of 230 games
marino played 240 total games
and favre is going to play his 270th game tomorrow....
every qb in history has a comparable pass rating of at least 60-65%
but only young and manning have a total lifetime qb rating of 95. or above.
favre is lifetime of 86. montana 85. marino 86. aikman 81. but tom brady is 93. 3rd best lifetime overall. but only played 9 season so far so what's to become of his stats down the road. you see? the team will carry you in those good years but in the end the stats won't lie. so we can go by past records for evaluating the best overall and that's superbowl wins but....
only peyton manning has a complete record of 16 games played every season of his career (4 shy of favre's)
playing 269 straight without missing a game? nobody can break that record. peyton has to play 92 more games straight without missing one? oh, and win one more superbowl than favre. montana/young/aikman/brady all have multiple superbowl wins and that is what it all boils down to but in the end, who was the most durable to play the game and invincible is more like it. can manning play 4 more years and not miss a game? who can say. i know so far - in only 7 seasons brady won an astounding 77 games and so far only lost 24 so it is safe to say that if he plays 5 more seasons and proves to be that good consistently he may just have to be ranked the best to have played,. but i don't think he can hack 3 more seasons of this. clearly my vote always went to montana but having jerry rice was a godsend.
my vote for toughest qb is elway or favre. and if you want to get technical go to the throwbacks like bart starr/fran tarkenton/etc etc.
my vote for most durable is favre
my vote for most consistent (rated) is young but consistent to play is favre.
my vote for most technical is manning
my vote for best arm has to go to marino.
my vote for best general in the running game is aikman
brady needs 4 more years but will likely be my
vote for best general of any team.
i don't argue anyones beliefs or dissagreements with this so don't
debate me. just post your own. this is my general consensus and i left out way too many qb's who deserve mention.
but just for the record. brett favre has 497 td's to date......
the only other qb that comes close is dan marino with 420....
now brady has 225 to date. can he put up 215 more in like 3 years "even 5 if he makes it?"
god, elway only had 300 and montana 273.
only one super bowl to his credit but brett favre in my eyes is the best to have played.

Well - two of the best will be featured this afternoon for sure.

Im hoping the Jets defense can disrupt Mannings timing just a tad maybe get a deflective pick 6 that will keep em in the game.
Drew Brees is pretty darn good himself. Should be a fun Sunday of football no matter what happens. Enjoy the games fellas.

Jets - New Orleans Superbowl.

You can tell that the guy who made that was from Indiana.
He spelled interception wrong.
