Default Live bait vs Artificial

I see there is some talk about live bait presentations for wiper / striper .
Is there a time of year ,or when conditions are just right ,for live bait lake fishing. Or is it just a fisherman's preference ??
I have never used live bait ..or cut bait ..(or liver??) for wipers.

I am no expert, so I'm sure better replies will come.

My opinion is this. Artificial has an advantage because when trolling artificial you troll at a higher rate of speed and your "bait" is always lively. You cover a lot more water and can find more scattered fish.

If you know where active fish are stacked up, it can be easier to just sit on them with live bait. Even inactive fish will hit bait if it sits right in front of their face long enough. Typically if I am using live bait, I am also using my trolling motor so you are a lot more stealthy than trolling with the engine. The big problem with live bait is keeping it lively and putting it in front of the fish.

I personally like to take both to the lake. If I know where they are I will hit them first with live bait. If I don't know where they are I will start trolling artificial and look for them.

I'd have to agree with Panfish. I have used live bait when trolling for lake wipers, and it was successful, but I thought it attracted smaller fish. In Indiana, you can't just go out and net a bunch of shad and use them for bait without getting cited if you're caught. We have only one lake where you can do that, and it has no wipers, so I can't speak to the success or failure of that tactic.

My 2 cents(worth about a penny):
There's a reason why guides spend mucho $$ for bait tanks...I've never been out with a guide who didn't already have live bait, or was looking for it at the beginning of the the trip. I agree with panfish and Slow, artificials are a great way to cover alot of water looking for fish....but in most cases, IMO, the candy will outperform artificial "most" of the time. Heck, I even take some bugs with me when I go bream fishing...just in case.
All that said, I'd rather catch one on arts than five on lives...but when the going gets tough,,,, I'm headed to the bait shop.

You're right, Slo. I kinda forget that basic rule, but you're right. Last year was the first year I went an entire season without buying live bait. Had a good year, too, but out of fifty years of fishing, I spent many, many of those years fishing live baits and have no complaints.

Slowretrieve,

Your right about the live bait law in Indiana being screwed up. It is actually legal to go out and catch live shad and put it in your bait tank. It is also legal to take live shad fishing with you. In Indiana to be legal you have to kill the shad before you put it on your hook though. This law accomplishes nothing. It just means that you are allowed to have the freshest cut bait possible. To be cited under the current code, the CO would actually have to find a live shad on your hook when your hook is in the water. I know a member of the ISBA is working with the DNR to correct this law. It is going to take some time though. I talked to several biologist and CO's about this last year.
