LITTLE ROCK - An early summer opportunity to improve knowledge of both boating and fishing is coming up next week. And it's free.

DeGray Lake Resort State Park and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will present a boating safety class and fishing seminar on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 22 and 23, at the park's lodge.

The seminar will have a three-hour boating safety class each day from 9 a.m. until noon, then the afternoon will be devoted to fishing information and instruction, along with contests.

Professional bass fishermen Keith Green of Arkadelphia and Ron Shuffield of Bismarck will discuss plastic worm fishing, schooling fish, jig fishing, spinner baits and other strategies. Area striped bass and hybrid bass guide Jimmy Johnson will talk about techniques of hybrid fishing.

Game and Fish Commission biologists will discuss fish biology, stocking, fish identification, habitat and other topics.

Green is a competitor on national bass tournament circuits and is the son of Ricky Green, a top name in competitive fishing since the early 1970s.

Shuffield has made multiple appearances in the prestigious Bassmasters Classic and is among the leading money winners in professional fishing.

Johnson has years of experience with both Lake Ouachita's stripers and DeGray Lake's hybrids.

The event doesn't cost anything but seating is limited on a first-come basis. Lunch will be available in the lodge's restaurant.

DeGray Lake Resort State Park is located 6 miles north of Interstate 30's Exit 78, or 25 miles south of Hot Springs on Arkansas Highway 7. For more information call (501) 865-2801.
