Hi steel I know this is a very late reply to your post but I just joined
the site and I am a N.J. guy also. I do a lot of surf fishing on L.B.I.
because it is very close to home for me. I have been surf fishing for
about 7 or 8 years now after moving down the shore.
I was a mainly a fresh water guy before that. The best advice I
ever got about surf fishing was just get out there and do it.
Ask a lot of questions. It is much easier to start out learning the
ropes with bait. Once you start lure fishing it can be overwhelming for sure.
The very first time you hook up you will be addicted for life.
During the winter months go to some shows and flea markets.
Think about joining a club. I joined two clubs when I was still new to it
and some guys (not all ) will be happy to help and give you advice.
Best of luck to you and any time you want to fish shoot me pm
