The Checkered Stripes of West Coast Stripers
Why do West Coast striped bass have interrupted or broken stripes as compared to East Coast fish? I fished SF Bay in April releasing about 70 fish all of which had broken strpes to the point of looking checkered. Most of my striped bass fishing is done around Block Island where the 7 or 8 lateral stripes are solid. Now and again a fish will show a break or off setting of one or two stripes. It seems to be common knowledge that the solid striped fish spawn in the Chesapeake Bay whereas the broken striped fish come from the Hudson River.
Does anyone have information about the stripes on West Coast bass and how they got that way? Has some hybridization taken place with white bass?
