Clarification. Unfortunately, this federal gamefish designation only applies to federal waters. There are still 7 of the 13 coastal states which allow commercial fishing for striped bass in their state waters (up to 3 miles out) in spite of the federal ban and the current declining state of the fishery, while 6 of the coastal states have judiciously adopted "gamefish" status for their state waters as well.
