Drainage Basin or Watershed:16,820 square miles

Average Depth: 63 feet (60-120 feet)

Volume: 18 trillion gallons

Coastline: 600 miles

Source of Fresh Water: 90% of the freshwater comes from three major Connecticut Rivers - the Thames, Housatonic, and Connecticut

Tides: two high and two low each day with the greatest tides in the west

Population Living within 50 miles: 20 million people

Fish Populations: more than 120 species of finfish, including 21 tropical species that stray here seasonally; at least 50 species spawn in the Sound

People throughout New England and New York all have a stake in Long Island Sound. The entire coastline of Connecticut and part of New York sit on Long Island Sound. Eighty percent of the fresh water entering the Sound comes from rivers that drain states as far north as Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The State operates over 100 public boat launch areas which give boaters access to lakes, streams, and Long Island Sound. A complete listing of boat launch locations, including areas with Car Top/Carry -In Access, may be found in the Connecticut Boater's Guide . For a printed copy of the guide, contact the DEP Boating Division at P.O. Box 280, 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT 06371-0280, (860) 434-8638, or by email [email protected]

Much of the saltwater sport fishing in Connecticut occurs in Long Island Sound. The offshore commercial fisheries are also intimately tied to Long Island Sound because many juvenile fish are produced in the sound before migrating offshore. The juvenile life stages of many important recreational and commercial species, such as flounder and scup, depend on the fringing wetlands of Connecticut's shoreline for nursery areas. Bluefish and striped bass, which are also important recreational species, inhabit the sound and adjacent rivers, but depend on coastal wetlands for the small fish that are their food. Bluefish populations along the Atlantic coast have been in decline, and scientists believe that loss of wetland habitat is partly to blame. The most important commercial species, hard clam, depends on coastal wetlands for the detrital food chain that supports their growth
