2007 Reel Guide
Mar 27, 2007
by Rob Pavlick

Pflueger has revamped several models for 2007. First, their Infusion SS spinning series consists of five separate models, with capacity ranges from 115 yards/6 lbs to 230 yards/17 lbs. Key features include a sealed drag system, a rugged aluminum body and side plate, and corrosion resistant bearings in key locations. Pflueger's Sure Click bail system and machined aluminum handle with a large, soft knob makes the retrieve an ease. Also new for 2007 is the Pflueger Contender SS baitcast reel. The precision cut brass gears on this 9.8 ounce baitcaster have a 6.3:1 ratio. Spooling 170 yards of 14 pounds, the Contender has a 6-pin adjustable centrifugal anti-backlash control and a titanium line guide. These two lines of reels make great editions to the Plfueger tradition.

The two new Quantum Energy PTs low-profile baitcasting models - E770PTs and E760PTs - are the newest additions to the Energy PT family. Twenty parts have been changed in the PTs models from the freshwater versions to assure they both perform and last. Anchoring the enhancements are two Quantum Nitrogen-Alloy PT bearings supporting the spool, which Quantum boats will improve the crank and last longer. The E770PTs features the high-speed Burner 7.0:1 gear ratio. It retrieves an impressive 28.8 inches of line per turn of the handle. The E760PTs sports a 6.3:1 gear ratio and retrieves 26.1 inches of line per turn. Both models feature CNC machined aluminum frames, side covers and front supports. They have a MaxCast™ ultralight skeletal spool, extra-hard PT gears, Super Free Spool™ pinion design, and ceramic Zirconia level-wind systems.

When having a fish on or near the bottom, being able to first turn your fish away from the rocks and then crank it up as fast as possible are two very definite desirables. Shimano designs their Torium line of conventional reels with this in mind and they have expanded this popular line to include the new Torium 14. Set to hit stores this month, the TOR-14 handles 300 yards of 14-pound test line, and up to 200 yards of 20-pound. Cranking power and high speed line retrieval comes from Shimano's High Efficiency Gearing (HEG), which makes the Torium capable of reeling in 36 inches of line a crank at a 6.2:1 gear ratio. The TOR-14 features Shimano's specially treated A-RB (anti-rust) bearings that add at least 10 times more corrosion resistance than standard bearing. Other construction features include a diecast aluminum frame and a stamped aluminum right side plate to keep gears in precise alignment. Additional features include Shimano's Super Stopper with Assist Stopper anti-reverse for no handle backplay - with a one-way A-RB roller bearing, an oversized clicker button, and an oversized cast control knob for easy adjustment.
