Fished the Delaware River 2 miles upstream from the Water Gap yesterday. Launched from Smithfield Beach boat ramp. Target location - Tock's island upstream to Smithfield Split. Water temps 40F - 43F degrees.
Water conditions: crystal clear, no vegetation, low to no structure. The river is low for this time of the year. I attribute it to a winter of low precipitation, so there is no snow melt and there was no true freeze. The river never even froze this year. If you don't have a jet stay off the river. You'll loose a prop as soon as you pass an island.
A few other boats on this stretch were reporting a few catches of walleye. We ran Rapala's, salted Bleeding Tubes and a few spinners. Had 2 hits all day but never hooked them. Warm weather has brought out some moths and caddis flies. I've never seen the a hatch this early.
No stripers were spotted. Look for them downstream between Shawnee Island downstream to Portland. Beware - the Kitatinny Boat Launch is NOT open nor accessible.
