Default Striper Variations Question

Strange question here but do stripers (or for that matter saltwater fish in general) show taste variations based on what they’ve been eating or where they’ve been hanging out?

What I mean is, would a striper taste differently if it’s been chowing down on lobster and shellfish vs. when it’s been eating baitfish? Would it taste differently if it were hanging out in a muddy creek vs. cruising the beachfront? Inner Boston Harbor vs. Outer Harbor?

I ask this because I have noticed it in freshwater before when eating fish from a sandy bottom lake vs. a muddy one and it got me thinking.

Any thoughts?

Not sure, but interesting question. I do know that more contaminants can build up in the fatty tissues of fish which frequent highly poluted areas. In general I think ocean going striped bass have enough of a varied diet that it would be hard to really tell if what they happened to have eaten recently really made much of a difference.

I was kind of thinking the same thing as far as the ocean going ones but I wonder about the "resident" fish that will often camp out under waterfront restaurants or by tourist spots where they get fed bread and fries all day. Considering they are not designed to eat potatoes or grain all day I wonder if it affects the taste or for that matter their health.

The last study done on french fry fed striped bass was inconclusive, but there was a study done on striped bass who ate laffy taffy all day and 5 out of the 6 bass tested were found to have an increased sense of humor.

I'd like you to cite your sources...probably some BS study paid for by the Corn Refiners Association. Don't be fooled, in 10 years those bass will start showing elevated levels of obesity and type II diabetes. Damn high fructose corn syrup and damn Wilford Brimley.

But I like obese bass

By the way,,, laffy taffy is best fished on a 4/0 circle hook under a pink bobber.
