Here are the 1st reports of Herring arriving over the past few years locally. Water temps in early April are generally in the Mid 40's up the Albany way.

4/6/2006
4/14/2007
4/11/2008
4/8/2009
4/5/2010

And here are the current water temps ...

Albany
37.8
Poughkeepsie
41.4
West Point
41.0

So it is possiable some could arrive in another 7-10 days ... but give it a solid 2-weeks and there should be some around.

Good luck
BB

uh oh .... here we go again

the herring show up every year in early to mid april ... regardless of the water temp ... it is a function of the lengthening days

i have caught them in the creek with a net when the river was 40 degrees .... and the herring were here in good numbers

you cant catch em on the sabikis till the water hits 50 or so but they can be netted in the creeks

Very interesting, I did not know that, but it makes sense. Just the opposite of what triggers the whitetail doe to come in to estrus.

Photoperiodism....

Are there any theories regarding this in relation to a measure of time?
such as the concept of the rutting moon for whitetail deer which is the 2nd full moon after the fall equinox north of the 35 parallel.

ok out of curiosity i did a little research...

Using Brians dates i tried to find any kind of correlation i could to relate his herring arrival dates to the vernal equinox (3/21) and its moons. I know this is a totally uncontrolled experiment in a totally uncontrollable environment, with other factors that can and have both accelerated and/or suppressed effects on the spawning run.

-----Herring arrival-------------------------------Moons

--------4/6/2006---------------------------Full-4/14 New-4/28
--------4/14/2007--------------------------Full-4/3 New-4/17
------*4/11/2008--------------------------Full-3/21 New-4/6
--------4/8/2009---------------------------Full-4/9 New-4/25
--------4/5/2010---------------------------Full-3/30 New-4/14
----------*2011-----------------------Full-3/20 New-4/3 Full-4/18

* Full moon falls on/or within a day of the vernal equinox

Based on the data above there is no discernible pattern or therefore correlation between those herring arrival dates and the moon dates. Once again this is a totally uncontrolled environment in only one very small section of a very long river.

On a side note if there is anything at all to this post, If i were Brian Id be taking a close look at my 2008 log and be lookin to get into the herring this year the weekend of 4/9-4/10

Very interesting concept nonetheless.

You know Tony, just recently i was comparing our best number days over the years to moon phase each year. There was nothing conclusive about it at all it was all over the place.

I thought maybe i'd find something ... in the end it doesn't make a huge difference to me personally, because i'll be out trying when even i can during the run.

I agree totally i think in many ways it is very comparable to the whitetail rut. The moon may have a big influence on movement and feeding outside of that rut or spawn window, but inside the window its just a total free for all. Long story short, just be out there as much as you possibly can. Your odds are directly related to the amount of time you put in on the water!

yep.... just get out there and fish

one of my best days in the past couple of years i would not have even gone out except my buddy was in town from syracuse... we got to the launch and there were 20+ mph winds from the south... which is just miserable on the river

we got to the lauch and almost bagged the trip ... instead i put my 48 inch drift sock out the back of my rowboat and it held us almost perfectly still while on the hook... and we whomped on the fish...

tuna supposedly bite best on the new moon... my 3 day trip a couple of years ago fell on a full moon ..... the fish didn't bite at night but they chewed all day long while we were trolling

bottom line is the fish need to eat to live...
