Thanks,,,I bought size 6,8 and 10. The 6 looks small to me, there is not much gap between the shank and barb. I've never used circles before but you guys on here know alot more than I do. This is a great site,,lots of info and help,,,Thanks Again Dobb

The eights are good. I like the bigger hooks for chunking bait.

Dobb,

I see you posted 6,8.10... I asume 6/0,8/0 and 10/0

different hook manufacturers hook sizes and style hooks can differ, espcialy when it comes to circle hooks. I Use Gamigatsu "J" hooks but think Owner makes a better circle hook.
and like Jim go one size larger with chunks.

Using circles takes some getting used to,remember just to bring the line tight and reel,if you "set" the hook you may miss the fish.

Circle hooks save fish,no doubt about it.

Good luck

Thanks again fellas,,I just tied up my rig. Hows this sound,?? I use 30lb spider wire, tied 13ft of 40lb mono shock leader on the spiderwire, sliding 1&1/2 egg sinker which can run up the shock leader. 100lb swivel, then 2 ft of 20 lb mono with a size 8/0 Eagle claw razor sharp circle sea hook. I'll be casting from shore and probaly be using a chunk of mackerel or herring,,also plan to try live eel. Any suggestions or modifications needed???

Sounds like it oughta work,30lb shocker would probably have been OK,I dont use as long of a shocker,6' seems to do the job nicely, but you have to try what wors for you.... let us know how you do!!!!!

Default Shock Leader

What knot you guys use on the shock leader to braid ?I use a uni knot and run about 6' of shock leader to a snap swivel on trolling rods. Should I just use a spro swivel and not trie braid to floro shock ?

I use Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks, for Herring chunks,
Sea Worms, Clams 6/0 fished on a fish finder rig
for live Herring or Eels 7/0 or 8/0

fish finder rig= main line to swivel to 3 foot leader to hook tied with a snell knot

live line rig= main line to swivel to 3 foot leader to hook

When I use a circle, I use Gamy and Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp Octopus circles, sizes range from 3/0 to about 7/0. Mid season when its hot and the bait is small in the rivers, thats when I use the smaller sized hooks with smaller chunks of bait.

Cuz, for trolling I really like ball-bearing swivels...they spin very easily, so absolutely no line twists occur...I highly recomend them...

Last season...I tried the tube and worm with a regular "barrel swivel"...I got no fish so I gave up and decided to chunk...the line wouldn't come off the spool it was so twisted...thats when I made the switch, and I haven't had a problems since...

65lb power pro tied w/modified albright with a 50lb shock leader which is up to 50 inches. i try not to cast a knot through my guides, sometime it will only be 3ft. i like my my leader idealy, to be the length of the fish i'm targeting.when targeting big fish 8/0 gamakatsu or owner circle hooks now and 11/0 gamakatsu octopus hooks when the big bass are here for live bunker.

For the Useless information file.
Over 20 feet of shock leader will disqualify an IGFA world record.
